τίς; τί; wer? welcher?; (a) in direkter Frage; substantivisch, allein stehend: τίς δ' οὗτος ἔρχεαι; wer bist du, der da kommt?; τίνα φῶ λεύσσειν τόνδε, wen soll ich sagen, daß ich da sehe?; τίς οὖν ταῦτα πίϑοιτο; wer möchte dies nun glauben?; wenn sich τί auf etwas Vorhergehendes bezieht, dessen genauere Bestimmung durch die Frage veranlaßt werden soll, tritt besonders bei den Komikern der Artikel dazu, τὸ τί; τέων αὖτε βροτῶν ἐς γαῖαν ἱκάνω; in welcher Menschen Land?; τίν' εἶπας τόνδε μοι λόγον; was sprachst du mir da für eine Rede?. Es finden sich auch zwei τίς in einem Fragesatze vereinigt: ἐκ τίνος τίς ἐγένετο; = wer ist er, und von wem stammt er?; (b) in indirekter Frage; sowohl mit dem tempus und modus, die in direkter Frage stehen würden, als mit dem optat. der indirekten Rede. Ἐς τί; bis wann? wie lange?; ἦλϑες δὲ κατὰ τί; weshalb? zu welchem Zweck?; ἐκ τίνος ἐπλήγης, weshalb?. Zuweilen drückt es Staunen und Unwillen aus. Τί; steht oft absol., wie? wozu? warum?; τί δ' οὔκ; warum nicht?; τί δή; warum denn?; so macht besonders τί δέ; τί δὲ δή; einen lebhaften Übergang von einem Gegenstande auf einen anderen, wie nun? quid vero?; τί γάρ; warum nicht?; τί οὐκ, wie quidni, quin, als Aufforderung gebraucht, τί οὖν οὐ διηγήσω ἡμῖν τὴν ξυνουσίαν; = so erzähle uns doch; τί μήν; warum denn nicht? wie sollte es nicht? wie anders?; τί τοῦτο; was soll das? was heißt das?. Besonders merke man noch das bei Platon eingeschaltete τί; in welcher Beziehung?. Die Griechen erreichen bes. durch τί mit einem partic. so eine Kürze, die wir nicht gut wiedergeben können, τί ἂν ποιοῦντες εὐτυχοῖεν; was tuend, möchten sie wohl glücklich sein? = was müssen sie tun, um glücklich zu werden? καταμεμάϑηκας οὖν τοὺς τί ποιοῦντας τὸ ὄνομα τοῦτο ἀποκαλοῦσιν; hast du bemerkt, was die Leute tun, welche man mit diesem Namen nennt?τί -
