41 ἕψω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `kook, seethe' (Ion.-Att.).Derivatives: ἕψημα `what is cooked, meal, soupe' (Ion.-Att.) with ἑψηματώδης (Dsc.), hell. ἕψεμα (LXX; cf. Schwyzer 523), ἕψησις `cooking' (Ion.-Att.); ἑψητήρ, - τήριον, - τής, - τικός (hell.); ἑφθός `cooked' (Ion.-Att.; with ἄπ-εφθος a. o.), ἐψητός `id.', also name of a fish (Ar., X.; cf. Strömberg Fischnamen 89), ἑψανός `cooked, to be cooked' (Hp.), ἑψαλέος `id.' (Nic.; after ὀπταλέος [Hom.] a. o.); also ἑψέϊνα n. pl. meaning unclear ( PLond. 3, 1177, 217; IIp). - From ἄπεφθος NGr. ἀπόχτι (through ἀπόφθι(ον)) `dried food' (Crete), `salted meat' (Cyprus), s. Hatzidakis Glotta 3, 72f.; from ἑψανός NGr. ψανός `what is roasted', ψάνη `wheat', s. Georgakas ByzZ 41, 380f.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Cannot be separated from Arm. ep`em `cook'. As Arm. p` can hardly represent (with Pedersen KZ 39, 428) IE ps, we should posit IE * seph-, which would have had an s-enlargement in Greek (Schwyzer 706). The `new' (familiar?) Greco-Armenian word ousted old πέσσειν (s. v.). Cf. Porzig Gliederung 156. An other expression for `cook' is ζέω, s. v. The word is prob. Pre-Greek (Fur. 327, who compares δέφω \/ δέψω.Page in Frisk: 1,604-605Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἕψω

42 μῶλυς
μῶλυς, - υοςGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `enervated (also mentally); dull, feeble, weak' (S. Fr. 963. Nic., Demetr. Lac.);Other forms: also μῶλυξ (cod. - δ-; cf. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 42f.) ἀπαίδευτος, μώλυκα τὸν ἀπαίδευτον. Ζακύνθιοι H.; μωλυρόν νωθρόν, βραδύ H.Derivatives: μωλύω, - ύνω, - ύνομαι, aor. pass. μωλυ(ν)θῆναι, perf. med. μεμώλυσμαι, rarely with ἀπο-, κατα-, δια, `boil imperfectly, scald, simmer', med.-pass. `become powerless, fade away', esp. of wounds `fail to come to a head' (Hp., Arist.); μωλύεται γηράσκει, μεμωλυσμένη παρειμένη H. With the verbal nouns μώλ-υσις (- υνσις) f. `spoil' (opposite ἕψησις; Arist., Thphr.), - υτης ἐπέων meaning uncertain (Timo).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With μωλύω (to which μωλύ-ν-ω; cf. Schwyzer 728) cf. κωλύω; the much more rare μῶλυς may be a backformation. With a velar μῶλυξ like κόρυξ νεανίσκος H. (s. κόρη); μωλυ-ρός like ἐχυρός, καπυρός a.o. (hardly with Benveniste Origines 36 to μωλύνω with ρ: ν -change), if not dissimilated from - υλός (cf. Leumann Glotta 32, 223 A. 2 = Kl. Schr. 249 n. 3). -- Because of the not very clear meaning and the unclear formation etymologically hard to asses. By Fick 23, 189, Bq a.o. connected with μέλεος (acc. to Bechtel Lex, 224f. and Specht KZ 59, 93 also ἀμβλύς); rejected by WP. 2, 285. After Prellwitz BB 26, 310 (accepted by WP. 2, 301 and Pok. 746) however to μῶλος. Diff. again H. Petersson Et. Miszellen 18: μωλύω to μολούω (s. μολεύω) as κωλύω to κολούω. -- Everything hypothetic. - The suffix - υκ- looks Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μῶλυς

Hdt. 1, 85, trag.).Derivatives: 1. ὄλβιος `blessed, having goods, happy' (Il.), voc. ὀλβιό-δ᾽αιμον (Γ 182; Schwyzer 105 w. lit.), superlative ὄλβιστος (hell.; Seiler Steigerungsformen 104 f.); 2. ὀλβήεις `id.' Various hypotheses by Prellwitz s. v., Bezzenberger BB 5, 171 f., Pisani KZ 61, 180ff., Grošelj Živa Ant. 2, 213, Machek Listy filol. 72, 71 f. - Furnée 155 connects ὄλπα χόνδρου τις ἕψησις. --- ἔδεσμά τι. η ὄλβος H.; if the word is cognate, it must be Pre-Greek, which is at all a good possibility.Page in Frisk: 2,375Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὄλβος

44 οὑλαί
Grammatical information: f. pl.Meaning: `(unmealed) barley corns, roasted and sprinkled between the horns of the sacrificial animal' (Ion. since γ 441); Lat. mola salsa (on the meaning Buttmann Lexil. 1, 191ff.).Compounds: As 1. member in οὑλο-χύτας acc. pl. f. `id.' (Hom.); οὑλό-χυτα τὰ κατάργματα H.; comp. of οὑλαί and χέω (s.v.) with το-suffix (cf. e.g. ἀκμό-θε-τον); οὑλο-χύτας followed in gender οὑλαι (diff. Schwyzer 439: for *οὑλὰς χυτάς); from this οὑλοχυτ-έομαι `to besprinkle with οὑ.' (Thphr. ap. Porph.). Also οὑλο-χόϊον (- χοεῖον?) ἀγγεῖον, εἰς ὅ αἱ ὀλαὶ ἐμβάλλονται πρὸς ἀπαρχὰς τῶν θυσιῶν H.; as if from *οὑλο-χόος, - χοέω.Derivatives: ( ὀλβ-άχνιον (with ὀλβ- = ὀλϜ-) n. `basket for the ὀλαί' (EM 257, 53 [Syracus.]; also ὀλβάχιον κανοῦν. Δεινόλοχος H.; ὀλβακήϊα `id.' (Dor. after H. s. εὔπλουτον κανοῦν). See s.v. ὀλαγμεύειν ὀλὰς βάλλειν Phot. with ὀλαιμεύς ὁ (cod. τὸ) τὰς ὀλὰς βάλλων H.; on γ οὑλαί ι s.v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 22. S.s.v. λαίγματα; these words do not belong to οὐλαί as then the suffix α + velar cannot be explained.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: As in Arc. ὀλοαί ο can stand for F (Brugmann-Thumb 44; cf. δοάν = δϜάν s. δήν), we get a basic ὀλϜαί. -- Technical word without convincing connection. The comparison with ὄλυραι and ἔλυμος `barley' (s.v.) is quite hypothetic. Even more doubtful combinations in Specht Ursprung 114, 127 a. 146. - Prob. Pre-Greek; cf. ὄλπα in H..Page in Frisk: 2,443Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > οὑλαί
