67 σιφλός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: Adj., of physical and psychical defects, approx. `crippled, lame' ( πόδα σιφλός A. R.), `blinded, foolish ( Γλαῦκος Eleg. Alex. Adesp. 1, 2; of fishes Opp.); also `porous, hollow' ( νάρθηξ Eust.).Derivatives: Aor. opt. σιφλώσειεν (Ξ 142, curse), subst. σίφλος `infirmity' (Lyc.), - ωμα `porosity, hollowness' (Eust.). -- Besides σιπαλός approx. `blinded, maimed' (Call. Fr. anon. 106, H., Eust.); also with ν-suffix σιφνός κενός, σιφνύει κενοῖ H., σιφνεύς m. `mole' (Lyc.; Bosshardt 66); unclear σίφνις = σιπύη (s.v.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin] (V)Etymology: With σιφλός cf. τυφλός, χωλός etc. (Chantraine Form. 238), with σιπαλός: ἁπαλός, ἀταλός, στρεβλός etc.; with σιφνός: στριφνός, στρυφνός, also κενός a. o. As expressive adj. of these wavering meanings are constantly changed after associated words, it would be wrong, to see in the above varying forms the effect of an IE sound or suffixvariation (cf. Specht Ursprung 260). The ν-formations σιφνός, σιφνεύς, σίφνις can hardly be separated from σίφων (s. v.); however σιφλός and σιπαλός stand apart because of their stem. They could be cognate with σίνομαι (Bq). -- Pre-Greek because of the variants.Page in Frisk: 2,712-713Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σιφλός

68 στριφνός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `dense, solid, hard' (Ion. hell. a. late).Derivatives: - ότης f. `density', of stile (D. H.); also στρίφνος m. des. of tough or hard food (σ. ἀμάσητος ἀκατάποτος LXX).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Expressive word which reminds of στιφρός, στέριφος, στρυφνός and could be a cross; for the suffix cf. also πυκνός, συχνός. Beside it στρίφος, acc. to Suid. = λίσπος (of ἀστράγαλος); τὰ στρίφη meaning unknown ( Sammelb. 6264, private letter, Rom. time). Similar formations, perh. cognate, are found in Germ., e.g. MLG NLG strif, stref `stiff, severe, solid', MHG LHG streben; s. Bq, WP. 2, 633, Pok. 1026 w. further lit.; cf. also Fraenkel Gnomon 22, 238. Cf. στῖφος.Page in Frisk: 2,810Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στριφνός

69 στύφω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to astringe, to have an astringent effect, esp. of taste, to thicken, to obstruct, to treat with a corrosive' (Hp., Arist., hell. a. late).Dialectal forms: Myc. turupterija? (sc. γῆ)Derivatives: 1. στῦψις ( ἐπί-, ὑπό-) f. `astringence, thickening, corrosion' (Hp., Arist., Thphr. etc.). 2. στῦμμα ( στύμμα?) n. `astringent' (medic.). 3. στυπτηρία, Ion. - ίη, f. des. of contracting minerals. `alum (-stone), vitriol' (Hdt., Hp., Arist. etc.), also 'alum-monopoly' (pap.), with - ήριος `treated with alum' ( PHolm.), - ηριώδης `containing alum' (Hp., Arist. a.o.), - ηριακὸν δέρμα = aluta, - ηρίζουσα = aqua qua alumen lavatur (gloss.); also - ηρά `id.' ( PHolm.), prob. after the adj. in - ηρός, e.g. ταριχηρός (s. Mayser Pap. 1: 3, 96); cf. Scheller Oxytonierung 119. 4. στυπτικός `astringent' (Diocl. Fr., Hp., Thphr. a.o.). 5. στυφός `id.' (Vett. Val., Gp.), with - ότης f. `density' (Plu.), - ώδης `astringent, bitter' ( Cat. Cod. Astr.). 6. Prob. also στύφλος (s. v. s. στυφελίζω) and στυμνός (: στύμμα; cf. ἐρυμνός) adjunct of στυπτηρία ( PHolm.) = σκληρός, αὑστηρός (Hdn. Gr., H.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Without convincing explanation. The formal similarity with στύω (s. v.) is obvious (cf. θύω: τύ-φω). Also a semantic connection can be construed if one wants ('stiff, be solid, get more solid, draw together'), but does not become very convincing. (The same is true of the connection with στύππη, στύππεῖον (s. v.), which is Pre-Greek.) Cf. also στρυφνός. -- Further, partly deviating combinations in WP. 2, 620 and Pok. 1035.Page in Frisk: 2,815-816Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στύφω
