1 πτύσσω
πτύσσω, - ομαιGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `to plead, to fold (up)', midd. `to fold round oneself' (Il.).Other forms: Fut. πτύξω, - ομαι, aor. πτύξαι, - ασθαι, pass. πτυχθῆναι, πτυγῆναι, perf. πέπτυγμαι, ἔπτ-.Derivatives: 1. πτυκτός `folded' (Ζ 169 a.o.; Ammann Μνήμης χάριν 1, 13) with πυκτή f. ( Cod. lnst.), πυκτ-ίς f. (AP, Gal.), - ίον n. (sch., Suid.) `tablet' (dissim. from πτ-; Schwyzer 260). 2. πτύγμα ( πρόσ-, περί- u.a.) n. `fold, loop of a garment, compress' (Ε 315, E., Arist., medic.) with ( προσ-)πτυγμάτ-ιον n. `compress' (medic. 3. πτύξις ( ἀνά-, διά- a.o.) f. `the folding, fold' (Hp., Arist.). -- Besides πτύχ-ες pl., acc. - ας, sg. dat. -ί (Hom.), acc. -α (E. in lyr.) f.; with enlargement πτυχ-ή, mostly pl. - αί f. (posthom. poet.) `fold, ply, layer', metaph. `gorge, valley'; it functions also as verbal noun to πτύσσω, esp. to the prefixcompp. (e.g. ἀνα-πτύσσω: ἀναπτυχ-ή); as 2. member in δί-, τρί-, πολύ-πτυχος (Il.; Sommer Nominalkomp. 65 f.), with transfer in the σ-stems, partly taken as verbal, in περι-πτυχ-ής `folding round' (S.), δι-πτυχ-ής (Arist.) a.o. From πτυχή: 1. πτυχ-ίς, - ίδος ( ὑπο-) f. `layer, joint' (Plu.); 2. - ιον n. `folded table etc.' (Hdn. Gr., pap.), - ιος = πτυκτός (EM); 3. - ώδης `fold-like, ply-like' (Arist.); 4. Πτυχ-ία f. n. of an island near Corcyra (Th.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Beside πτύσσω there are also quite rarely forms with - ττ- ( δια-πτύττω Pl. Legg. 858e, προσ-ανα- πτύσσω Arist.); so - σσ- rather Ionism than to avoid τ: ττ (Schwyzer 319 n. 1; cf. 755 n. 2) ? As Yot-present πτύσσω stands for *πτύχ-ι̯ω; so it can be taken as denominative to πτύχ-ες. --Etymolog. unclear. The connection with the unclear Skt. pyúkṣṇa- (only in the comp. pyúkṣṇa-veṣṭita-), which goes back on Brugmann Grundr.2 I 277, is for several reasons very suspect; s. Mayrhofer s.v. On other hypothesen s. Bq s.v., WP. 1, 189, W.-Hofmann s. fugiō (everywhere rightly rejected). Cf. also Merlingen Μνήμης χάριν 2, 57. -- Furnée 318 considers the word a Pre-Greek, which may well be correct, but his connection with πυκ-νός etc. is not convincing.Page in Frisk: 2,616-617Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πτύσσω

2 πίμπλημι
πίμπλημι, - αμαιGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `to fill, to make full', intr. `to fill oneself, to become or be full' (Il.).Other forms: - άνεται 3. sg. (I 679), rare - άω, - έω (Hp.), also πλήθω (intr., late also tr.; ep. poet. Il.). Aor. πλῆ-σαι, - σασθαι, - σθῆναι, (Il.), intr. πλῆ-το, - ντο (ep.), ἐν-έπλητο etc. (Att.), fut. πλή-σω, - σομαι (Od.), - σθήσομαι (Att.), perf. midd. πέπλησμαι (IA.), act. πέπληκα (Att.), intr. πέπληθα (poet.).Compounds: Very often w. prefix, e.g. ἀνα-(συν-ανα-, προσ-ανα- a.o.), ἐν- ( ἀντ-εν-, παρ-εν- a.o.). As 1. member in some governing compp., e.g. πλησίστιος `filling the sail' (Od., E.), `with full sails' (Ph., Plu.).Derivatives: 1. πλέως (also w. ἐν-, ἀνα-, ἐκ- a.o. to ἐμ-πίμπλημι etc.), Ion. πλέος, ep. πλεῖος = *πλῆος, ntr. πλέον `full' (Il.). On the comp. πλείων with sup. πλεῖστος s. esp. -- 2. πλή-μη f. `high tide, flood' (Plb., Str. a.o.), - σμη f. `id.' (Hes. Fr. 217), - μα πλήρωμα H., - σμα n. `fertilisation' (Arist.); - σμιος `saturating, causing tedium' (Epicur., medic.); - σμονή f. `fullness, congestion, (over)saturation' (IA.; Schwyzer 524, Chantraine Form. 207) with - σμονώδης (Hp., Gal.), - σμονικός (Pythag. Ep.) `(over)saturating'. On πλήμνη s. v. -- 3. πλή-ρης `full' (IA.); as 1. member e.g. πληρο-φορέω ` fulfill' (Ctes., LXX, NT, pap.); πληρό-της f. `fullness' (Plu.), πληρ-όω, very often w. prefix, e.g. ἀνα-, ἐκ-, ἀπο-, συν-, `to make full, to (ful)fill, to finish, to pay fully' (IA.) with - ωμα ( ἀνα-, συν- a.o.) n. `filling, filling piece, full number, full payment, (full) crew' (IA.), - ωσις ( ἀνα-, ἐκ- u.a.) f. `accomplishment, complement, satisfaction' (IA.; Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 128), - ωτής ( ἐκ-, ἀπο-) m. `finisher, executor, collector' (Att.), - ωτικός ( ἀνα-, συν- a.o.) `fulfilling, completing' (Epicur., medic. a. o.). -- 4. πλῆ-θος n. `fulness, mass (of people), herd' (Il., Dor., Arc.); often as 2. member, e.g. παμ-πληθής `consisting of a whole mass, very numerous' (Att.); -θᾱ f. `id.' (Locr., Boeot.); -θύ̄ς, - θύος f. `id.' (Ion. Cret. Locr. hell.; Bechtel Dial. 2, 791f., also Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 110 against Leumann Hom. Wörter 294 f.) with - θύω `to be full, to become full, increase', - θύνομαι, - θύνω `to belong to the mass, to agree with it, to augment oneself; to make full, to augment' (A., Arist., LXX, NT); from it - θυσμός m. `increase' (Procl., Simp.), - θυντικός `plural' (Gramm. a.o.); 5. πληθ-ώρα, Ion. -η f. `fulness', rnedic. `plethora, full-blooded' (Ion. hell.; on the secondary barytonesis Wackernagel-Debrunner Phil. 95, 181 f.) with - ωριάω `suffer from p.'. - ωρικός `plethoric' (Gal.), - ωρέω `to be full' (Suid.).Etymology: The sigmatic aorist 3. sg. ἔ-πλησ-ε is (except for the -ε) identical with Skt. á-prās: IE *é-pleh₁s-t; with 1. pl. pres. πίμ-πλα-μεν agrees also, setting aside the secondary nasalisation of the present, Skt. pi-pr̥-más: IE *pi-pl̥-mé(s). Also 3. sg. πίμ-πλη-σι has a non-Gr. agreement, in Av. ham-pā-frāi-ti `fills up' over against Skt. pí-par-ti from IE * pi-pel-ti. Both in Greek and in Iran. came in sing. the langvocalic full grade plē- after other forms (e.g. the aor. *é-plēs-) for the prob. older Skt. pí-par-ti. After the pattern of τίθημι: τίθεμεν one made sometimes forms like ptc. pl. f. πιμπλεῖσαι (Hes.: τιθεῖσαι). With πέ-πλη-θ-α cf. still Skt. pa-prā́[u] (on θ below). -- The r-suffix in πλή-ρης (for older *πλη-ρο-ς? Schwyzer 513) is both in Arm. li-r `fullness' (from * plē-r-i-) and in Lat. plē-rus `for the greater part', plērī-que `most' (s. W.-Hofmann s. v.) attested. Also πλέως from *πλῆος (= Hom. πλεῖος), *πλη-(ι)ος can be equated with Arm. li `full' (better then li from * plē-tos = Lat. - plētus a.o.). The m-suffix in πλή-μη, - μα seems also in Lat. plēminābantur replēbantur (Gloss.; from * plēmen = πλῆμα) to be represented. -- Like πλῆ-θος: πλή-θω, πέ-πλη-θα also βρῖ-θος: βρί-θω: βέ-βρι-θα (s. v. and Schwyzer 511 a. 703); with πλῆθος, -θύ̄ς (on which Schwyzer 463f. and Frisk Eranos 43, 221) one compares Lat. plēbēs from IE *plēdhu̯ēs (cf. W.-Hofmann s. v.); well-argued doubts in Ernout-Meillet s. v. -- Further details w. rich lit. in WP. 2, 63f., Pok. 799f., W.-Hofmann s. pleō, Mayrhofer s. píparti1; older lit. also in Bq. On the Greek form still Schwyzer 689. -- Cf. πολύς, πλείων, πλήμνη.Page in Frisk: 2,537-538Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πίμπλημι

9 ἔχω 1
ἔχω 1.Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `possess, get(back-), have', aor. `conquer, take (in possession)', intr. `hold oneself', med. `id.';Other forms: also ἴσχω, aor. σχεῖν, ἔσχον, fut. ἕξω, σχήσω (Il.), perf. act. ἔσχηκα (Pl. Lg. 765a), med. ἔσχημαι, aor. pass. ἐσχέθην (late).Compounds: very often with prefix in various meanings, ἀν-, ἀπ-, ἐξ-, ἐπ-, κατ-, μετ-, προσ-, συν- etc. As 1. member in e. g. ἐχέ-φρων, ἐχ-έγγυος, ἐχεπευκής (s. v.), ἐκεχειρία (s. v.); also ἰσχέ-θυρον a. o. Kra. 393a as explanation of the PN [s. v.]; Sapph. 157 as surname of Zeus); ἐχυρός s. v. From εὖ ἔχειν: εὑεξία `good condition' (Ion.-Att.; opposite καχεξία from κακῶς ἔχειν) with εὑέκ-της, - τικός, - τέω, also - τία (Archyt.); retrograde formation εὔεξος εὑφυής H. (not with Schwyzer 516 σο-Suffix). From the reduplicated present (s. below): ἰσχάς f. `anchor' (S. Fr. 761, Luc. Lex. 15); lengthened forms ἰσχάνω, - νάω (Il.). From the zero grade (= aorist-stem): σχέσις `situation, character, relation, holding back' (Ion.-Att.), often in derivv. from prefix-compp., e. g. ἀνά-, ἐπί-, ὑπό-, κατά-σχεσις from ἀνα-σχεῖν, - έσθαι etc.; σχῆμα (cf. σχ-ήσω) `attitude, form, appearance' (Ion.-Att.; Schwyzer 523); secondarily σχέμα (H.) R.), cf. Schwyzer 469, Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 86f.; here also *σχερός (s. ἐπισχερώ), σχεδόν, σχέτλιος, σχολή, σκεθρός (s. vv.); (not to ἰσχύς). From the o-grade: ὄχοι m. pl. `holder, preserver' ( λιμένες νηῶν ὄχοι ε 404); ὀχός `fest, certain' (Ph. Byz.), further in verbal adjectives to the prefix-compp. like ἔξ-, κάτ-, μέτοχος (from ἐξ-έχειν etc.); ὀχή f. `holding, support' (Call., Lyc., Ath.); to the prefix-compp. συν-, μετ-, ἐξ-, ἐπ-οχή etc. (from συν-έχειν etc.); ὀχεύς "holder", `helm-strap, girdle-clasp, door-bolt etc.' (Il.; cf. Boßhardt Die Nom. auf - ευς 30, also on ὀχεύω `pounce upon' etc.; cf. s. v.); ὄχανον `shield-holder' (Anakr., Hdt.), also ὀχάνη (Plu.; cf. Chantraine Formation 198); ὀχυρός, s. ἐχυρός; ὄχμος `fortress' (Lyc.), ὄχμα πόρπημα H.; with ὀχμάζω `hold fest' (A., E.); adv. ὄχα `widely, by far' (ὄχ' ἄριστος Il.), ἔξοχα `in front of' (ἔχω 1 πάντων; Il.). Reduplicated formation: ἀν-οκωχή s. v.; also (ἐν) συνεοχμῳ̃?; s. v., w. compositional lengthening: εὑωχέω, s. v. - On συνοκωχότε (Β 218) s. v.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [888] *seǵh- `hold, have'Etymology: ἔχω, with reduplication ἴ-σχ-ω (\< *ἵ-σχ-ω, ( σ)ί-σχ-ω), has an exact agreement in Skt. sáhate `force, conquer' (= ἔχεται, IE *séǵʰetoi); but the zero grade aorist and the other verbal forms are isolated (GAv. zaēma not = σχοῖμεν, s. Humbach Münch. Stud. 10, 39 n. 12). In Greek the word group knew a strong development; cf. Meillet Άντίδωρον 9ff., Porzig Gliederung 115f. On the other hand in Greek fail the neutral s-stem Skt. sáhas- `force, srength, victoy', Av. hazah- `id.', Goth. sigis (cf. on ἐχυρός). The group is also represented in Celtic, e. g. in the Gaulish names Σεγο-δουνον, Sego-vellauni. - Older lit. and further forms in Bq s. v., Pokorny 888f.Page in Frisk: 1,603-604Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἔχω 1
