Mentre le prime espressioni inglesi definiscono semplicemente l'inutilità della cosa, le ultime due sottolineano l'irritazione che nascerebbe per un'azione destinata al fallimento, dalla perdita di tempo ecc. - Useless si usa normalmente anche come aggettivo in funzione attributiva ( un'informazione inutile = a useless piece of information) e predicativa ( questo attrezzo è inutile = this tool is useless), mentre no use e no good hanno solo funzione predicativa: "aiutala" "sarebbe inutile, è troppo stupida!" = "help her" "it would be no use / no good, she's too thick!". Per tradurre inutile si può usare anche unnecessary se il senso è quello di non necessario: è inutile dirglielo, sa già tutto = it's unnecessary to tell him, he knows everything already. - Per altri traducenti ed esempi, si veda la voce qui sotto.1 (privo di utilità) [oggetto, informazione] useless; [lavoro, discussione, suggerimento, rimprovero] pointless, useless; è inutile che partiate there's no point in your leaving; è inutile chiederlo a me it's no use asking me; inutile dire che... needless to say...2 (senza risultati) [sforzo, tentativo] ineffectual, vain; [ viaggio] fruitless, wasted; è inutile!
