1 κεύθω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `conceal', also `be hidden' (Il.).Other forms: also κευθάνω (Γ 453), κυνθάνει κρύπτει H., fut. κεύσω, aor. κεῦσαι, also κύθε (γ 16), redupl. subj. κεκύθωσι (ζ 303), perf. κέκευθα.Derivatives: κεῦθος n., often plur. - εα `hiding, cave, depth' (Il.), κευθμών, - μῶνες `id.' (Od.), κευθμός, - μοί `id.' (Ν 28, Lyc., Call.); cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 240 and 263; also κευθῆνες οἱ καταχθόνιοι δαίμονες Suid. (Schwyzer 487, Solmsen Wortforsch. 143).Etymology: A form near to κεύθω can be found in Germanic in the OE yot-present hȳdan, NEngl. hide `conceal'. Further one compares Arm. suzanem `dive, hide' (Bugge KZ 32, 38f.; also Lidén Armen. Stud. 122); it presupposes however an initial palatal ḱ, which does no fit with the words further adduced (Skt. kuhū́ḥ f. `new moon' ("the hidden"), kuharam n. `cave' (Mayrhofer KEWA s. kúhakaḥ); also the other representatives of IE. ( s)keu- `cover' (Pok. 951ff.) have velar k. Here also some Celtic verbal nouns, e. g. MIr. codal `skin' (cf. Vendryes WuS 12, 242). - Beside these words from IE. * keudh- there are several with final t, s. κύτος. 2 κοέω
Grammatical information: v.Derivatives: also κοάω in κοᾳ̃ ἀκούει, πεύθεται; ἐκοᾶμες ἠκούσαμεν, ἐπυθόμεθα; ἐκοάθη ἐπενοήθη, ἐφωράθη; κοᾶσαι αἰσθέσθαι H.; - ἐκόησεν (Call. Fr. 53). - Seemingly primary ἔκομεν εἴδομεν, ἑωρῶμεν, ᾐσθόμεθα H. (s. below). - Verbal adj. in ἀνα-κῶς (s. v.). Λαο-κόων, εὑρυ-κόωσα `who learns from far' (Euph. 112, H.) a. o. (cf. Bechtel Namenstudien 37f.).Etymology: On κοίης etc. s. κοῖον. As iterative-intensive deverbative (after Zupitza KZ 40, 251 w. n. rather denominative) κο(Ϝ)έω (beside which κο(Ϝ)άω; Schwyzer 717ff.) identical with Lat. caveō, cavēre (\< * covēre) `beware'. A zero-grade primary formation is seen in Skt. ā-kúvate `have in view'. Also in ἀκεύει (= ἀκέϜει?) τηρεῖ H. a cognate primary (full grade) verb has been assumed. (Unclear however ἔκομεν; s. Schwyzer 721 n. 10 a. 740). To these verbs several verbal nouns are found, e. g. Skt.. kaví- m. `seeer, poet, wise man'. - Beside IE. keu- there was skeu-, s. θυοσκόος. Cf. also ἀκούω and κῦδος. More forms s. Pok. 587f., W.-Hofmann s. caveō, Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. čúju.Page in Frisk: 1,890-891Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κοέω

5 θυοσκόος
Grammatical information: m. f.Meaning: name of a sacrificial priest, prob. "observer of sacrifice" (Hom., E.), also as translation of Lat. haruspices (D. H.); adjectiv. θυοσκόα ἱρά (IG 14, 1389 12; verse-inscr).Derivatives: θυοσκεῖν ἱεροῖς παρέξεσθαι, η θεοῖς H.; θυοσκεῖς 2. sg. A. Ag. 87 (- κινεῖς codd.); on the hyphaeresis (of *θυοσκοεῖν) cf. βοηθεῖν from βοηθόος.Etymology: An analysis of θυο-σκόος with *σκοϜός can hardly be rejected, which seems found in Goth. un-skawai (for * us-skawai?) sijaima = νήφωμεν; in any case one must connect the Germ. iterative OS skauwōn, OHG scouwōn ` schauen'. We thus get a side-form with σ- of the Greek iterative κοέω `note, understand', s. v.; cf. also ἀνακῶς.Page in Frisk: 1,695Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θυοσκόος

6 κηυα
Grammatical information: ?Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]X [probably]Etymology: Expression of unclear meaning; τρικτευαν in any case to τριττο(ι)α, τρικτύα `sacrifice of three animals'. If, like these, substantivized derivation (of τρικτύς, τριττύς), κηυαν will be an adjective; perh. = *κηιϜαν, through metathesis from *κηϜ-ιαν `destined for burning' (from καίω, aor. *κῆϜ-αι)?; cf. κηώδης and κήϊα, κεῖα καθάρματα H. Not with Bechtel Dial. 2, 156 from *kēu̯usi̯ă. - Diff. Prellwitz BB 17, 166ff.) κηυα rather a verbal abstract *κηϜ-ι̯ᾰ, acc. to Schwyzer 459 w. n. 7 (s. also 349) however *κήϜ-ᾱ.See also: -Page in Frisk: 1,846-847Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κηυα

7 κῶας
Grammatical information: n., pl.Meaning: `weak, hairy skin, fleece' (Il.).Dialectal forms: Myc. kowo \/kōwos\/.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Without certain etymology. Acc. to Bq from long grade *κῶϜας, IE. * kōuǝs- (as γῆρας; Schwyzer 349) from the s. κύτος discussed group `cover, conceal', IE. ( s)keu-; incorrect; doubts in WP. 2, 547 and Pok. 951. Not (with Curtius and Prellwitz) to κεῖμαι. - A full grade is what we expect, which would give *koHu̯-H-s or *keh₃u̯-h₂-s, which is rather strange; the inflection - ας, - ε- is also unusual: the -e- would fit with the Myc. nom., but then - ας is strange; it rather seems that a strange, i.e. Pre-Greek, word was adapted to Greek; so prob. the word is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,59Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κῶας

8 σκεῦος
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `vessel, device', mostly pl. `house-, ship-equipment, weapon, armour, luggage' (IA.).Compounds: Often as 1. member, e.g. σκευο-φόρος `carrying luggage, luggage-carrier' (IA.), σκευ-ωρός `luggage-watcher' (Cratin.) with - ωρέομαι, - ωρέω, - ωρία, - ώρημα `to look after, through the luggage, to instigate (slyly)' (D., Arist. etc.), later also σκαιωρέομαι etc. (after σκαιός); as 2. member in ἀ-σκευής `without equipment' (Hdt.).Derivatives: σκευή f. `armour, clothing, wear' (IA.); as 2. member e.g. ὁμό-σκευος `with equal armour' (Th.); to this very often w. prefix: παρα-, κατα-, ἐπι-σκευή a.o. as backformations to παρα-σκευάζω etc. (cf. below). -- Diminut.: σκευ-άριον n. `small device' (Ar. a. o.), `simple wear' (Pl. Alc. 1, 113e), - ύφιον n. `small device' (Lyd.). -- Secondary formation: σκευ-άζω, - άζομαι, aor. σκευ-άσαι, - άσασθαι, very often w. prefix, παρα-, κατα-, ἐπι- etc. in diff. shades of meaning, `to equip, to arm, to dress, to prepare etc.' (IA. since h. Merc.); from there, mostly to the prefixcompp., σκεύ-ασις, - άσιμος, - ασία, - ασμα, - αστός, - αστής, - αστι-κός; also παρασκευ-ή etc. (s. above). Denominative ἐπι-, κατα-σκευ-όω (: ἐπι-, κατα-σκευή) = - ἀζω (Argos, Crete, Delphi a. o.), σκευοῦσθαι = ἑτοιμάζεσθαι H.Etymology: The nouns σκεῦος, -ή (for *σκεῦσος, - σά because of the retained ευ-diphthongs?; cf. Schwyzer 348 Zus. 4) look like primary formations and presuppose as such the former existence of a primary verb, approx. *σκεῦ[σ]-σαι, *σκεύ[σ]-ι̯ω, which must have been replaced by the second., denomin. or deverbat., σκευ-άζω. -- Expression of every-day language, prob. inherited, but without convincing etymology. Hypotheses by Prellwitz (to Lith. šáu-ju, -ti `shut, scove', Russ. sovátь `shove, sting, push', OHG sciozan `shut' a. o.; cf. Vasmer s. v.); by Zupitza Germ. Gutt. 122 (to OWNo. høyja, OE hēgan `carry out', Slav., e.g. OCS prě-kutiti `adorn'; cf. Vasmer s. kutítь). WP. 2, 546, Pok. 950f.
