LCD (liquid crystal display) est le sigle utilisé pour qualifier un écran à cristaux liquides, à savoir un écran utilisant le reflet de la lumière sur les cristaux liquides pour afficher des données. On utilise parfois aussi le sigle ACL (affichage à cristaux liquides). L’écran LCD équipe d’abord les appareils portables - ordinateur portable, PDA (portable digital assistant), ebook, webpad et tablette PC (personal computer) - avant d’être utilisé aussi pour l’ordinateur classique et pour le téléviseur. Souvent appelé écran plat, l’écran LCD d’ordinateur remplace peu à peu l’écran traditionnel à tube cathodique, beaucoup plus volumineux. En 2003, la vente d’écrans plats d’ordinateurs dépasse celle des écrans traditionnels. En 2004, le téléviseur à écran LCD ultra-plat commence à remplacer le téléviseur classique à écran cathodique.
