5 Coat
Very strong and coarse jute or hemp plain weave fabric, which is usually tarred and used on ships. ———————— The garment so called at present was not seen in its original shape previous to the second half of the 17th century, but the word was applied to articles of costume for both sexes both here and on the Continent as early as the 13th century. About this time the " Cote " in France was a close body-garment, over which, as its name implies, the " Surcote " was worn at pleasure, in or out of doors. Henry VIII wore long coats, demi coats, short coats, riding coats, coats with shirts, with loose sleeves and without any-Most of these coats were composed of bright coloured materials, cloth of gold and damask silver, striped with purple velvet, white satin, purple and black velvet. In the reign of Charles II was first seen what in these days would be popularly termed a coat. During the reigns of James II and William III the coat only altered in having sleeves looser, longer, and with heavy cuffs. -

General subject: coat in velvet -
11 Frock
A term that has been applied to many different garments. Originally it appears to have been a monastic garb. " A coat of velvet made like a frock " is said to have been worn by Henry VIII when he met Anne of Cleves. Cotgrave refers to porters' and carters' frocks of his day (1650) which was the same as the countryman's smock-frock of recent years. To " unfrock " a clergyman is a term still used. -

15 Petticoat
PETTICOAT, PETIT-COTE (French)Literally, a little coat. The word is first met with in Henry V's time as a Petit coat of red damask, but as it is described as having open sleeves, it must have been really a little coat. As late as Henry VII, the petticoat appears in ladies' wardrobes, and was worn with the kirtle, being made of silk, velvet, grosgrain, etc., fringed about the skirts with silk or bordered with gards, lace, fringe, etc. The petticoat absorbed the kirtle about 1630, and in the reign of Charles II there is mentioned " short under-petticoats, pure, fine, some of Japan stuff and some of Chinese." In 1712 is noted " a petticoat of rich, strong, flowered satin." A petticoat is now an underskirt worn by women. -

20 Cape
This familiar appendage of the coat or cloak was, in the 16th century, a separate article of apparel. It was then made of " purple cloth of gold baudkin," also of " crimson satin, embroidered all over with Venice gold tissue, and lined with crimson velvet, having five pair of large aglets of gold." In 1735 capes were extremely fashionable, and in 1738 were worn made of black velvet over loose overcoats of coloured cloth. From that date they appear to have been confined to the great-coats of coachmen, livery servants, parish beadles, and to the cloaks of cavalry.
