Король сажает в тюрьму обоих, дав им время и возможность объясниться друг с другом и решиться на свадьбу, которая справляется в тот же час.► Последний из 4 полнометражных фильмов с Шевалье, поставленных Лубичем. В этом упражнении в стиле представлена не вся палитра режиссера, а лишь отдельные, самые яркие краски, но именно это делает фильм драгоценным: приглушенная, но постоянная чувственность; внешняя элегантность; некоторая холодность в интонации, при всем ее обаянии и всей экспансивности; отсутствие всякой сентиментальности. Фильм красив прежде всего почти живописной формой. Зрителя завораживает та непринужденность, с которой Лубич прибегает к карикатурности, но не утрирует, ищет в людях определенную плотскую выразительность, но избегает банальности и наконец жертвует всем ради чудодейственной легкости линий. При помощи актеров-марионеток, роскоши, нюансов и контрастов черно-белого изображения он сочиняет маленькую человеческую комедию, персонажи которой, очаровательные и пустые, тратят неимоверные усилия, чтобы понять и узнать друг друга. Иногда кажется, что если дать этим марионеткам свободу, им даже хватит смелости быть несчастными. Но Лубич всегда настороже и твердой рукой возвращает их на прямую дорогу к счастью и легкой жизни. Именно эта воля и отличает его от Офюльса, с которым у него много общего.N.B. Параллельно Лубич снимал франкоязычную версию с теми же актерами; она слегка отличается от англоязычной. В ней автором сценария указан Марсель Ашар. Забавному французскому акценту Шевалье в американской версии тут приходит на смену очаровательный английский акцент Дженетт Макдоналд, говорящей и поющей на французском. Еще одна параллель, сохранившаяся в фильме, связана с птицами, которых Мактиг спасает, держит в клетке (кошка подстерегает их, как Маркус подстерегает Мактига), а затем выпускает на волю в пустыне - впрочем, напрасно; вскоре последняя птица замертво упадет на землю.Отсутствие многих эпизодов лишает зрителя важной информации о персонажах (напр., устранение отца Мактига, пьяницы, ходившего к проституткам и умершего в кабаке) или об отношениях между ними (начало дружбы Мактига и Маркуса), а также вредит поэтической и аллегорической конструкции, на которой строился весь фильм. Не менее жаль того, что исчезли сцены скитаний Мактига после совершенного им преступления. Помимо прочего, эти сокращения нарушают ритм всего фильма в целом; из-за них эпизоды, действие которых происходит на Западе или в пустыне, кажутся нам не достойными такого восхищения специалистов. Невероятные усилия актеров и членов съемочной группы, работавших при страшной жаре, огромные финансовые средства, потраченные на съемки, - все это испарилось в кратком пересказе, оставшемся от этих эпизодов в окончательной версии. Книга Вайнбёрга, составляющая теперь неотъемлемую часть ансамбля нашего знания о фильме и сама ставшая фрагментом фильма, убедительно доказывает, что чуть более длинная монтажная версия (на 30 или 45 мин длиннее) была бы вполне приемлемой и несравнимо превосходила бы известную нам картину; несомненно, такой была 4-я монтажная версия Штрохайма и Ингрэма. Многие считают Талбёрга непогрешимым, но в этом случае он допустил непоправимую ошибку. Штрохайм почти не преувеличивал, когда говорил: «Я считаю, что снял за свою жизнь единственный фильм, да и того фильма никто не видел. Его жалкие, изуродованные останки были выпущены на экран под названием Алчность».БИБЛИОГРАФИЯ: 4 публикации сыграли огромную роль и нашем постепенном знакомстве с фильмом: 1) раскадровка «полной» версии, изданная на англ. языке «Бельгийской синематекой» в Брюсселе в 1958 г. (по экземпляру сценария, принадлежавшему лично Штрохайму и сохраненному его вдовой Дениз Вернак); 2) журнал «L'Avant-Scene», № 83–84 (1968): поэпизодный план фильма в дошедшей до нас версии с добавлением пересказа вырезанных или не снятых сцен в том виде, в котором они представлены в «брюссельском сценарии»; 3) книга, включающая в себя «брюссельский сценарии», описание известной нам версии и их сопоставление (Lorrimer, London, 1972; повторное издание - Faber and Faber, London, 1989).
