10 -appuntamento e appointment-
Nota d'usoAppuntamento corrisponde ad “appointment” solo in contesti lavorativi o in caso di visite mediche: Ho un appuntamento dal dentista alle 9, I have an appointment at the dentist's at 9. Quando invece si tratta di un appuntamento romantico, si usa la parola “date”: È vero che hai un appuntamento con Chiara?, is it true that you've got a date with Chiara? Nel caso di appuntamenti con amici o simili, si ricorre spesso a “to meet”: Abbiamo appuntamento davanti al bar, we're meeting in front of the bar. -
11 -e.g. o i.e.?-
Nota d'usoE.g. e i.e. sono due abbreviazioni di origine latina, entrambe d'uso comune nella lingua inglese. E.g. è l'abbreviazione di exempli gratia e corrisponde all'italiano “per esempio”: The holiday will include visits to some of the local attractions, e.g. the caves and the pottery, la vacanza comprenderà visite ad alcune delle attrattive locali, per esempio le grotte e la fabbrica di ceramiche.I.e. è l'abbreviazione di id est e si traduce con “cioè”: Ensure you have all the relevant details of your insurance, i.e. the name of your insurance company and the name of your insurance broker, assicurati di avere tutti dettagli della tua assicurazione, cioè il nome della tua compagnia e il nome del tuo agente. -
12 -to pass o to pass by?-
Nota d'usoQuando il verbo italiano passare è usato per indicare una possibile visita, senza un appuntamento preciso, non va tradotto semplicemente con “to pass”, ma con il verbo frasale “to pass by”: Puoi passare domani, you can pass by tomorrow (non you can pass tomorrow). Esistono molti altri verbi frasali che esprimono questo significato, come “drop by”, “pop in”, “pop by”, “pop over”, “pop round”, “call by”, “call in”, “come round” e “come by”. Il registro di queste espressioni è piuttosto colloquiale, ma quasi tutte sono usate sia per una visita in casa che in un ufficio/banca: Passate la prossima settimana per prendere un appuntamento, please, call by next week to make an appointment. “Call in” è probabilmente l'opzione più formale, mentre “come round”, “pop over” e “come over” vengono generalmente usati solo in contesti informali, relativi a visite a casa di qualcuno. -
