Contratado por Hal Roach en 1923, durante los seis anos siguientes es creador de gags, supervisor y director, trabajando con Charley Chase y, sobre todo, con la pareja Laurel & Hardy, para la que hizo uno de sus mejores cortos, We Faw Down (1928). Leo McCarey es, sin duda, uno de los grandes del cine americano.
