continental shelf
The gently sloping seabed of the shallow water nearest to a continent, covering about 45 miles from the shore and deepening over the sloping sea floor to an average depth of 400 ft. It continues until it reaches the continental slope. The continental shelf contains most of the important fishing grounds and a range of resources, including gas and oil, sand and gravel. However, the shelf is, in general, a structural extension of the continent, and so may also be a source of minerals found in that region, such as tin, gold and platinum. (Source: WRIGHT)

108 bajada
(Sp. model spelled same [baxáda] < Spanish verb bajar 'to go down' < Latin bassiare 'to go down' plus Spanish derivational suffix -¿/a)OED, SW: 1866. This term is referenced by Hendrickson, Hoy, Clark, Watts, the DARE, and the OED. It is generally defined as an incline sloping downward formed by the merging of several alluvial fans (composed of rock debris, such as gravel, sand, and silt). The term may also refer to a steeply descending trail. The DRAE also references bajada as a trail that leads downward. Santamaría adds that in Mexico the term also refers not only to a trail, but to any downward slope. The trail boss and drivers encountered many bajadas and subidas (trail leading up) in the uneven, rocky, and sometimes treacherous western terrain. -

117 ἠρίον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `mound, barrow' (Ψ 126).Compounds: Als 1. member in ἠρι-εργής τυμβώρυχος H.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Acc. to Kretschmer Mélanges van Ginneken 207ff. here also the river name Ήριδανός: orig. name of a small river in Attica, then through mixing with ` Ροδανός applied to this and the Po (on the formation Schwyzer 530); diff. Pokorny Mélanges Boisacq 2, 193ff.: Ήριδανός from Rhodanos through Iber. * Errodanos with adaptation to the Attic river name (improbable; diff. on Ήριδανός Alessio Studi etr. 18, 150, Belardi Doxa 3, 205). Formation as κηρίον (: κηρός), μηρία (: μηρός) a. o. (Chantraine Formation 59). By the ancients connected with ἔρα `earth' (cf. Schwyzer 424, where unclear πολύηρος πολυάρουρος, πλούσιος H. is recalled), but after Ψ 126 μέγα ἠρίον rather to be reconstructed as *Ϝηρίον. Often derived from a root u̯er- `cover' (WP. 1, 280ff.), referring to Germanic words, e. g. OWNo. vǫr f. (IE *u̯orā) a. o. `hill or bank of stones or gravel', OWNo. ver n. (IE *u̯oriom) `dam', which depend first from a verb for ` avert', Goth. warjan etc. hang from. - (Not to Skt. vr̥ṇóti which rather belongs to εἰλύω; s. v.)Page in Frisk: 1,643-644Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἠρίον

aquifer
Layers of rock, sand or gravel that can absorb water and allow it to flow. An aquifer acts as a groundwater reservoir when the underlying rock is impermeable. This may be tapped by wells for domestic, agricultural or industrial use. A serious environmental problem arises when the aquifer is contaminated by the seepage of sewage or toxins from waste dumps. If the groundwater in coastal areas is over-used salt water can seep into the aquifer. (Source: WRIGHT)
