В этом Россен странным образом похож на своих героев. В смысле чистого успеха достижения Россена-сценариста (его перу принадлежат такие шедевры экранизации, как Морской волк, The Sea Wolf и Странная любовь Марты Айверз, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers), кажется, затмили его режиссерскую карьеру. Хотя его несколько тяжеловесная политическая притча Вся королевская рать, All the King's Men, 1949 всегда пользовалась заслуженным успехом, подлинный контакт с широкой публикой он наладил лишь благодаря Ловчиле. Этот фильм (как и бoльшая часть картин Россена) раскрывает типично американскую тему успеха. В США ей придают патологически большое значение. Россен раскрывает ее через сложного персонажа, «неудачника». Под «неудачником» Россен в данном случае понимает талантливого человека, которому не хватает силы воли и характера, чтобы максимально реализовать талант, что вынуждает его прятаться за разными отговорками (пьянство, усталость и т. д.). Фильм выводит уравнение: успех = талант + характер. По сюжету характер героя закаляется в боли и угрызениях совести. Но Ловчила окружен двусмысленностью, которая не всегда кажется намеренной. С одной стороны, фильм прославляет силу воли и решительность и внушает зрителю осторожный оптимизм (Ньюмен выходит из испытаний, став сильнее); с другой стороны, он явно отмечен влиянием безысходного фатализма голливудского кино 40-х годов, в особенности - нуаров. Поэтому относительно положительный финал похождений героя Ньюмена совсем не кажется убедительным. С другой стороны, Россен сохраняет критический взгляд на само понятие успеха и полагает, что «победители» - люди, одержимые успехом (а, следовательно, и властью над другими), - часто оказываются «извращенцами, психами, инвалидами» и по этой причине имеют право на сочувствие с его стороны. Этот аспект размышлений Россена заключен в образе симпатичной героини Пайпер Лори, крайне важной для сюжета. Она сделана из того же теста, что и герой Ньюмена, но более трезвомысляща, пессимистична и ранима. Наконец, Ловчила стремится обособиться от жанрового кино 50-х, описывая среду не в реалистически-социальном контексте, а, скорее, как символ, нравственно и философски отражающий человеческую природу. Тенденция эта, вынудившая Россена лишить повествование доброй части событий и внутренней динамики, тоже осталась неоднозначной, незавершенной и не вполне убедительной, поскольку Ловчила все-таки остается в первую очередь фильмом о бильярде, и именно предмету изображения он обязан своим успехом у публики. В конечном счете неясно, что больше предопределило успех - относительная смелость Россена (попытки оторваться от жанрового кино 50-х) или его не менее относительная осторожность; в самом деле, Ловчилу ни в коем случае нельзя назвать революционной картиной. Стремление фильма к символизму и абстракции очень удачно уравновешено мощной актерской игрой (Ньюмен, Джеки Глисон, Джордж К. Скотт, Мёрри Хэмилтон, Пайпер Лори), благодаря которой персонажи приобретают большую выразительность и всегда твердо стоят на земле.N.В. В руках Скорсезе фильм превратился в совершенно незначительную, но временами комичную историю о нравоучительном и ностальгирующем папаше, который изо всех сил пытается научить жизни третьесортного задаваку. 2-я часть фильма, где Ньюмен снова берет в руки кий, желая узнать, сможет ли ученик одолеть его, совершенно бессмысленна. Подлинная тема фильма - уже не афера, а «понты», и тема эта, безусловно, очень близка Скорсезе, самому показушному режиссеру своего поколения (обратите внимание, как он использует кран и монтажные эффекты). Première grande communauté virtuelle en ligne, The WELL (The Whole Earth ’Lectronic Link) est créé en 1985 par Stewart Brand, éditeur du Whole Earth Magazine. The WELL devient une grande plateforme d’échange via l’internet, avec la participation de dizaines de milliers d’artistes et d’intellectuels participant à la "révolution internet". Dans les années 1990, The WELL perd de nombreux membres qui se tournent vers le web naissant, ses forums, ses BBS (bulletin board systems) et ses listes de diffusion. Un BBS (bulletin board system) est un système informatisé reliant les personnes appartenant à un même groupe d’intérêt (association, entreprise, organisme, etc.) pour des annonces, des discussions, le transfert de fichiers, etc. Appelé “babillard” par les Québécois.
