Его преследуют власти страны: они скрывают от народа смерть генерала и на публичных выступлениях подменяют его двойником. Хирург не может попасть в американское посольство и прячется в мюзик-холле, где знакомится с певицей, американкой по матери, которую с трудом убеждает приютить его. Власти повсюду распространяют приметы беглеца. Тот же крадет одежду и документы у валютного спекулянта и вынуждает его связаться с проводниками, которые проводят нашего хирурга через горы до границы. С ним идет певица, тоже попавшая в розыск за помощь беглецу. Но оба схвачены; их спасает лишь весть о том, что двойник диктатора убит. Теперь власти могут официально объявить о смерти генерала. Хирург возвращается в Европу вместе с певицей.► На тему, очень близкую Кризису, Crisis, 1950, Ричарда Брукса (снятому практически в то же самое время), Гиллиат делает ловкий, умный фильм, держащий зрителя в напряжении от первой и до последней минуты. Фильм не настолько углубляется в моральную сторону сюжета, как это сделал Ричард Брукс. Тем не менее в нем отчетливо дано понять, что хирург, который мог легко убить диктатора или отказаться от лечения, зрело взвесил свои поступки и поставил врачебную этику выше прочих соображений. Гиллиат особенно выделяет разнообразие перипетий и мест, через которые проходит эта затяжная погоня. Он сторонится слащавости и бежит от штампов, как от чумы. Он готовит множество сюрпризов и умело нагнетает тревогу, которая рождается благодаря полному отождествлению зрителя с главным героем, затерявшимся в чужом и враждебном мире. Эта тревога не исключает юмора, поданного внутри сюжета тщательно выверенными дозами (обратите внимание на спекулянта, превосходно сыгранного Хербертом Ломом). Гиллиат подошел к делу настолько тщательно, что даже попросил преподавательницу Лондонской языковой школы сочинить особый язык для обитателей Боснии. STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS Se denomina State of the Union Address al discurso que el presidente de Estados Unidos dirige cada mes de enero al Congreso y al pueblo estadounidense, en que muestra su visión de la nación y la economía y explica sus planes para el futuro. Como el discurso recibe una amplia cobertura informativa, el mensaje del presidente va dirigido no solo a los parlamentarios sino a todo el país.
