23 Midway Islands
Коралловые острова в центральной части Тихого океана, к северо-западу от Гавайев: остров Восточный [Eastern Island] и остров Песчаный [Sand Island]. Площадь 5,2 кв. км. Открыты американским капитаном Бруксом [Brooks, N. C.] в 1859, владение США с 1867. В 1903 здесь построена станция трансокеанской кабельной связи. Командование ВМС дало атоллу название Мидуэй ("середина пути"), так как он расположен на полпути между Калифорнией и Японией. В 1935 построен аэродром "Панам эруэйз" [ Pan Am Airways]. С 1941 база ВМС США [ Navy, U.S.]. 4-6 июня 1942 здесь произошло одно из важнейших сражений второй мировой войны на Тихом океане [Midway, Battle of], закончившееся уничтожением большей части японского флота. Успех в сражении позволил американцам перейти в контрнаступление. Население островов 450 человек (1990) (военные). Управляются Департаментом ВМС [Naval Defense Sea Area].
