Premier journal imprimé de l’histoire, Relation paraît en 1605 à Strasbourg, alors ville du Saint Empire germanique, un siècle et demi après la création de l’imprimerie par Gutenberg en 1450 à Mayence. Relation est un hebdomadaire de quatre pages, lancé à l’initiative de l’imprimeur Johann Carolus, qui édite en allemand les dépêches ("Avisen") venues de plusieurs grandes villes européennes (Cologne, Rome, Venise, Vienne et Prague). Par exemple des nouvelles du pape, les faits d’armes des pirates de la Méditerranée, des inventions scientifiques, etc. Le périodique imprimé se généralise quelque deux cents ans plus tard, au 17e siècle. Le journal d’information populaire à grand tirage prend son essor à la fin du 19e siècle. Quant au journal en ligne, il devient monnaie courante à la fin des années 1990, quelques années après l’avènement du web. -
