Blumenthal Hesychst. 21, who points to Maced. γλέπου = βλέπω. Szemerényi, Studia Pagliaro 3, 1969, 236f: from - βλωψ from βάλλω and ὠπ-, `cast a glance'; improbable. It is possible that the verb and the noun βλέφαρον are unrelated; in that case the latter word may have been orig. *γλέφαρον and have influenced the verb. But it seems more probable that they were cognate, β\/γ and π\/φ pointing to a Pre-Gr. word (Fur. 389); but the first variation is rare. Pre-Greek had labio-velars which developed not always in the same way as the inherited equivalents. There is no etym. Perhaps Slav. glipati points to a (European) substratum.

    Etymology: Difficult because of the divergent meanings. One supposed two or three diffrent words. So in WP. 1, 267 ἕρμα `cliff' is considered a separate word (with Froehde BB 17, 304) and connected with Skt. várṣman- n. `height, hill, top, point'. This etymology however disregards the most important element of cliffs under the sea. On the other hand ἕρμα as ballast of a ship in WP. 1, 265 is with Vaniček and Fick (s. also W.-Hofmann s. sērius) connected with Lith. sveriù `weigh', svarùs `heavy', OHG swār(i) ` schwer'. In the meaning `support, prop' (2, 528) one connects words for `pole etc.', e. g. Skt. sváru- `pole,...at a sacrifice', OE swer `post, column', Lat. surus `twig, sprout, pole'. But it is very doubtful whether ἕρμα ever meant `pole'. - An attempt to combime all meanings makes Porzig Satzinhalte 266: the orig. meaning would be a `stone (for propping up a ship)', from where `Ballast-stones', and on the other hand - sarcastically - also `cliffs under the sea'. - Formally ἕρμα seems a verbal noun in - μα with regular ε-vowel. For an etym. one might think of Lith. sveriù `weigh' and relatives (s. above); so orig. `heavy weight, stone', IE *su̯ér-mn̥. - Kretschmer Kleinas. Forsch. 1, 4 thinks ἕρμα is Anatolian, pointing to the Lydian river Ε῝ρμος ( πολυψήφιδα παρ' Ε῝ρμον Orac. ap. Hdt. 1, 55), partly to Lycian PN in Erm-, Arm-. For non-IE origin also Chantraine L'Ant. class. 22, 69. - Wrong Gonda Mnemos. 3: 6, 165f. (Lat. sĕra, Gr. ἅρπη `sickle', IE * ser-.) - I see no reason for foreign origin.

    Etymology: The relation between μήδεα: μέζεα: μέδεα has not been explained. Wackernagel Unt. 227 n. 1 sees hesitatingly (after Nauck) in μήδεα a euphemistic replacement for the rough μέζεα, μέδεα; in μέζεα Schwyzer 208 with Bechtel and v. Wilamowitz assumes a spirantic pronunciation of the δ. -- Because of the meaning the etymol. explanation is difficult. Schwyzer l.c. connects μήδομαι, pointing to OHG gimaht f. `facultas, genitalia'. It would be then a euphemism identical with μήδεα `counsels, cares'. Thus (doubting) Spitzer BSL 40, 47 with P. Friedländer, with Lat. mentula (to mens??) as a very doubtful parallel. -- Not with Curtius 662, Fick 1, 507 a. o. to μαδάω `drip'; cf. μεστός. By WP. 2, 231 (Pok. 706) separated from μαδάω and combined only with Celt., e.g. MIr. mess (\< * med-tu-) `gland' assuming an allcomprising meaning `swell, swollen in the form of balls(?)'. The variation clearly points to a Pre-Greek word; on ε\/η cf. Fur. 258 n. 42; δ\/ζ is well known (Fur. 253ff.). This type of meaning fits well with a substratum word.

Gk.) is beginning to have some influence in the NT (Pla., Phdr. 229e αὐτά=this; X., An. 4, 7, 7 αὐτό; Dio Chrys. 3, 37; 15 [32], 10 αὐτοί; Aelian, NA 6, 10; Mél. de la fac. orient … Beyrouth 1, 1906, 149 no. 18 εἰς αὐτὸ ἐγεννήθης=for this [purpose] you were born; Schmid IV 69; 616 αὐτός = οὗτος; Synes., Ep. 3, 159a; 4, 165a; Agathias [VI A.D.], Hist. 1, 3 p. 144, 17 D.) καὶ αὐ. ἦν Σαμαρίτης Lk 17:16 (cp. 3:23; 19:2 and 1g above; on 5:1 s. Mussies 169). Yet here αὐ. could mean alone (examples of this from Hom. on in many writers in WSchulze, Quaestiones epicae 1892, p. 250, 3) he alone was a Samaritan; but Luke’s thematic interest in unexpected candidates for the Kingdom (cp. 5:30–32; 15:2; 19:2 [καὶ αὐτός]; 23:43) militates against the view.
    The oblique cases of αὐ. very oft. (in a fashion customary since Hom.) take the place of the 3rd pers. personal pron.; in partic. the gen. case replaces the missing possessive pron.
    α. w. ref. to a preceding noun διαφέρετε αὐτῶν Mt 6:26; καταβάντος αὐτοῦ 8:1; ἀπεκάλυψας αὐτά 11:25.—26:43f; Mk 1:10; 4:33ff; 12:19; Lk 1:22; 4:41. The gen. is sometimes put first for no special reason (Esth 1:1e) αὐτοῦ τὰ σημεῖα J 2:23, cp. 3:19, 21, 33; 4:47; 12:40. αὐτῶν τὴν συνείδησιν 1 Cor 8:12. Sim. Lk 1:36 αὐτῇ τῇ καλουμένῃ στείρᾳ w. her who was called barren. Forms of αὐ. are sometimes used without qualifiers in a series, referring to difft. pers.: φέρουσιν αὐτῷ (Jesus) τυφλόν, καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν (Jesus) ἵνα αὐτοῦ (i.e. τοῦ τυφλοῦ) ἅψηται Mk 8:22.
