15 -to lay / to lie-
Nota d'usoFra i parlanti di madrelingua inglese è abbastanza frequente l'uso erroneo delle forme di to lay ( lay, laying, laid, laid) al posto di quelle di to lie (2) ( lie, lying, lay, lain) con il significato di giacere, essere disteso (o coricato, sdraiato): You'd better lay (corretto: You'd better lie) on the bed, faresti bene a stenderti sul letto; He was laying (corretto: was lying) on the pavement, era disteso sul marciapiede. -
16 -to slide o to slip?-
Nota d'usoIl verbo scivolare può essere tradotto con “to slide” o “to slip”, che però possiedono diverse sfumature di significato. Quando scivolare è un'azione consapevole o piuttosto lunga, si utilizza il verbo “to slide”: I bambini si divertivano a scivolare sul ghiaccio, the children were having a good time sliding about on the ice. Se invece si scivola per sbaglio, con un movimento brusco e si perde l'equilibrio, si usa il verbo “to slip”: Scivolò e cadde sul marciapiede ghiacciato, she slipped and fell on the icy pavement. Per estensione, “to slip” significa anche sgusciare, o scivolare con movimento rapido e fugace; mentre “to slide” implica una scivolata più lunga e controllata: Sgusciò nell'area e segnò, he slipped into the goal area and scored; Entrò in scivolata e segnò il gol, he slid in and scored a goal. Quando si parla di veicoli, come un'automobile o una moto, si utilizza il verbo “to skid”: La macchina scivolava sulla strada ghiacciata, the car was skidding on the icy road. -
