Nacido en Filadelfia, la separacion de sus padres le llevo a pasar las primeras etapas de su vida en compania de su madre y de su hermano Irving, que con el tiempo seria un reputado fotografo. Despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, intenta la aventura teatral en la compania de Joshua Logan.
