указывает на завершенность действия, движение из, отделение части от целого, избавление, освобождение от чего-либо.С этим предлогом в английском существует огромное количество словосочетаний, обозначающих то, о чем говорить не принято, а значит неприличное и вульгарное (см. по всему словарю). Здесь и смерть, и секс со всевозможными вариациями (некоторые из них до сих пор называют извращениями). Здесь и другие физиологические отправления (во всех прямых и переносных смыслах), которые человек предпочитает не афишировать.Такая специфическая роль off понятна: наиболее волнующие, интимные вещи связаны для нас с физическим исходом из организма чего-то.Выражения, где off стоит в конце, часто вульгарны (они разбросаны по всему словарю), а те, где off в начале, обычно приличные, во всяком случае, их первый, основной смысл:Off — бросить что-то. Но на эбониксе - убить или осуществить половой акт (в русском есть этого же типа вульгаризм - "бросить палку").

Off base — не по канонам, неправильно, неподходяще.
Offbeat (off the wall) — необычно, странно.
Off-the-wall — необычный, странный - дословно - свалился со стены (у нас в похожем смысле валятся с неба или с луны).
Off the hook — избежать ответственности за что-то. Дословно - соскочить с крючка.
Off the record — не для протокола, конфиденциально.
Off the wagon — начать пить после периода трезвости (дословно - вывалиться из вагона).
Off-the-cuff — импровизированный, "от балды" (дословно - "из рукава", как часто предполагают, не в силах понять откуда это появилось у фокусника).
Off one's nut (rocker, trolley, deep end) — выживший из ума. Мы уже писали, что орех прочно ассоциируется с мозгом (см. nut (NUTS); про другую ассоциацию см. там же). Еще можно сказать - to nut out - означает "шевелить мозгами".
Off-color — неприличный. Если так можно сказать - слегка порнографический.
