В самом деле, фильм предстает в виде ледяной и берущей за душу элегии, словно танец, выражающий агонию 3 неудачников, «бывших», пойманных в силки удушливого городского мира. В связи с этой картиной немало говорилось об обличении расизма. Это гораздо более верно в отношении Перекрестного огня, Crossfire( Райан играл там роль убийцы-антисемита); в этом же фильме склонность Слейтера к нацизму служит лишь дополнительным элементом, почти абсурдным дополнением ко многим другим причинам, по которым его жизнь идет под откос. «Да он еще и расист», – отмечает Уайз с мрачной и скрытой иронией, которая не исключает сочувствия и даже парадоксального уважения к персонажу.
