7 -bowling o bowling alley?-
Nota d'usoQuando si vuole indicare un locale dove si gioca a bowling occorre usare l'espressione bowling alley, non semplicemente bowling: The bowling alley closed down last year, il bowling ha chiuso l'anno scorso (non The bowling closed down last year). Il sostantivo bowling si riferisce soltanto al gioco: Let's go bowling, andiamo a giocare a bowling. Si noti inoltre che la pronuncia della parola in inglese differisce da quella comunemente usata in italiano. -
8 -common people o ordinary people?-
Nota d'usoOccorre fare attenzione all'uso dell'aggettivo common in riferimento a persone. Infatti, in alcuni contesti e in relazione a chi lo usa, può assumere una connotazione spregiativa e prendere il significato di “rozzo”, “grossolano”: She's so common, è così rozza. Pertanto, in molti casi, risulta più prudente tradurre l'aggettivo “comune” con ordinary: The closure of the local post office will affect the lives of ordinary people, la chiusura dell'ufficio postale nuocerà alla vita della gente comune.English-Italian dictionary > -common people o ordinary people?-
-
9 -conservatory / conservatorio-
Il sostantivo corretto per indicare il mobile che contiene i libri è “bookcase”: Questa libreria è troppo piccola per tutti i miei libri, this bookcase is too small for all my books. Il negozio in cui si vendono i libri è invece chiamato “bookshop” o “bookstore”: C'è una bella libreria qui vicino, there's a nice bookshop near here.English-Italian dictionary > -library, bookcase o bookshop?-
-
11 -piacere e to like-
Nota d'usoIl verbo piacere viene spesso tradotto con “to like”. Occorre però ricordare che questi due verbi hanno una costruzione diversa perché “to like” è transitivo e richiede sempre un oggetto: Che cosa ne pensi di questa canzone? Mi piace, What do you think of this song? I like it (non, letteralmente, I like). -
12 -to cultivate o to grow?-
Nota d'usoMentre il verbo to cultivate significa “coltivare” sia in senso letterale che in senso figurato, occorre notare che la parola più diffusa per tradurre “coltivare” nel senso di “fare crescere” è to grow: He grows carrots in his spare time, coltiva carote nel tempo libero. L'uso di to cultivate è prevalente in ambito tecnico o in senso figurato: ad es. to cultivate a friendship, coltivare un'amicizia. -
13 -to tell o to say?-
Nota d'usoPer introdurre un discorso indiretto, si possono utilizzare i verbi “to tell” e “to say”, che significano entrambi dire. Tuttavia “to tell” richiede sempre un oggetto, cioè occorre indicare a chi è stato detto qualcosa: Mi disse che era malata, she told me she was ill (non she told she was ill). Quando non si vuole o non è necessario specificare l'oggetto, si usa “to say”: Disse che era malata, she said she was ill. Anche “to say” può avere un oggetto, ma la costruzione è “to say”+“to”+oggetto: Devi dire queste cose ai tuoi genitori!, you have to say these things to your parents! -

Note:This much-used verb has no multipurpose equivalent in Italian and therefore it is very often translated by choosing a synonym: to get lunch = to prepare lunch = preparare il pranzo. - Get is used in many different contexts and has many different meanings, the most important of which are the following: obtain or receive ( I got it free = l'ho avuto gratis), move or travel ( I got there in time = ci sono arrivato in tempo), have or own ( she has got black hair and green eyes = ha i capelli neri e gli occhi verdi), become ( I'm getting old = sto invecchiando), and understand (got the meaning? = capito?). - Get is also used in many idiomatic expressions ( to get something off one's chest etc), whose translations will be found in the appropriate entry ( chest etc). - When get + object + infinitive is used in English to mean to persuade somebody to do something, fare is used in Italian followed by an infinitive: she got me to clear the table = mi ha fatto sparecchiare la tavola. When get + object + past participle is used to express the idea that a job is done not by you but by somebody else, fare followed by an infinitive is also used in Italian: to get a room painted = fare verniciare una stanza. - When get has the meaning of become and is followed by an adjective (to get rich / drunk etc), diventare is sometimes useful but check the appropriate entry ( rich, drunk etc) as a single verb often suffices ( arricchirsi, ubriacarsi etc). - For examples and further uses of get see the entry below* * *[ɡet]past tense - got; verb1) (to receive or obtain: I got a letter this morning.) ricevere2) (to bring or buy: Please get me some food.) prendere, comprare3) (to (manage to) move, go, take, put etc: He couldn't get across the river; I got the book down from the shelf.) attraversare; prendere4) (to cause to be in a certain condition etc: You'll get me into trouble.) mettere; procurare5) (to become: You're getting old.) diventare6) (to persuade: I'll try to get him to go.) convincere7) (to arrive: When did they get home?) arrivare8) (to succeed (in doing) or to happen (to do) something: I'll soon get to know the neighbours; I got the book read last night.) riuscire a9) (to catch (a disease etc): She got measles last week.) prendersi10) (to catch (someone): The police will soon get the thief.) acciuffare11) (to understand: I didn't get the point of his story.) capire•- getaway- get-together

- For examples and further uses of get see the entry below -
