Сама обезьяна представляет собой лишь символ (естественно, перегруженный значением в столь необычном контексте) деградации человека, вставшего на путь насилия. И в этом – зародыш большинства более поздних фильмов Хайслера. В отличие от Николаса Рея, у которого человек должен побороть собственную внутреннюю склонность к насилию, и от Энтони Мэнна, у которого герой усилием воли достигает определенного равновесия между собственной жестокостью и жестокостью общества, Хайслер предпочитает описывать слабых людей, никаким внутренним роком не предрасположенных к насилию: их толкает на него социальное окружение, противное их природе.
