Лангу приходится воссоздать свою тематику и свой стиль в жанре, подчиняющемся строжайшим законам, и это ему превосходно удается. Получив в свое распоряжение довольно поверхностный сценарий по роману Грэма Грина, он принимает это как вызов и старается вновь стать самим собой, пусть даже на основе второразрядного материала. Проведя немало времени за созерцанием стенных часов, которые, возможно, перекочевали в этот фильм из Усталой смерти, Der Müde Tod, герой Министерства страха выходит из тюрьмы лишь затем, чтобы попасть в другую тюрьму, избегает одной ловушки и тут же попадает в другую. Миры, через которые он проходит, несут на себе печать нереальности, благодаря чему его похождения напоминают сон – или, вернее, полукошмар, в котором под сомнением постоянно оказывается все, что герой видит вокруг себя. Геометрический режиссерский стиль Ланга прощается с выразительной тяжеловесностью экспрессионизма и гениально сочетает серьезные мотивы и фундамент – и парадоксальную легкость формы. В данном случае подвижность повествования, беспрестанные скитания героя по все новым декорациям, напоминающие хождения по лабиринту, ощущение повсеместного присутствия врагов, появляющихся и исчезающих, словно фигурки в театре теней, – все это должно порождать беспокойство и окутывать интригу туманом. Тем не менее творчество Ланга пока еще не целиком и полностью пессимистично, и автор позволяет себе роскошь чувственного и деликатного описания «любовной истории», чьи самые прекрасные моменты происходят в метро во время воздушной тревоги. В этот миг герои полностью доверяют друг другу, и вокруг них создается маленький рай посреди кромешного ада.
