28 palomino
Ahorse of a golden or grayish-yellow color, according to Watts. This term may be used as an adjective or a noun. Islas is the only Spanish source that references this term, and he defines it as a term used in northern Mexico for a horse of a light bay color with a marble-colored mane and tail. Islas and Santamaría gloss palomo as a dull milklike color for a horse. Cobos defines the same term as "beige or cream-colored." The DRAE references a horse of a similar color known as isabelino. The Royal Academy indicates that this describes a horse of a pearl color, or a color between white and yellow. Alternate terms: California sorrel, Isabella. -

GUARDIA CIVIL The Guardia Civil, commonly referred to as la Benemérita, is the oldest of Spain's various police forces. A paramilitary force like the French Gendarmerie, it was set up in 1844 to combat banditry in rural areas, but was also used as an instrument of repression in the cities. Under Franco it was resented by many as an oppressive, reactionary force, and was especially hated in the Basque Country. With the return of democracy, Franco's despised Policía Armada were reformed as the Policía Nacional, and the present-day role of the Guardia Civil was redefined. They are mainly stationed in rural areas, and their duties include policing highways and frontiers and taking part in anti-terrorist operations. Their traditional tunics and capes have been replaced by a green uniform, and the famous black patent-leather three-cornered hats are now reserved for ceremonial occasions.guardia urbana — city police, town police

39 bayo
(Sp. model spelled same [βájo] < Latin badium 'bay-colored')1) California: 1855. Glossed by Clark as "a small reddish or bay-colored bean, especially used in Northern California as a baking bean." The VCN mentions a bean of the same name that is yellowish white in color.Alternate form: bayo bean.2) Southern California: 1857. A horse of a dun or light bay color, generally with black points (such as ears, muzzle, and lower legs)The DRAE indicates that this term refers to a horse of a yellowish-white color. The VCN says the horse is of a bright yellow straw color with mane, tail, muzzle, and feet of either white, dark, black, or saffron. Cobos references bayo as dun-colored.Alternate form: ballo.3) Clark: 1850s. According to Clark, "a bay or dun horse with a dark stripe running down its back." -
40 pita
(Sp. model spelled same [píta], of uncertain origin, probably from the Caribbean)1) Clark: 1760s. A fiber obtained from the agave or maguey plant or from another similar plant.2) A bag, box, rope, or net made from pita fiber. The DRAE glosses pita as a native Mexican perennial plant of the Amaryllidaceous family. Growing in a triangular pyramid, its light-green, fleshy, spiny leaves are about six to eight inches wide at the base and up to four-and-one-half feet long. It produces yellow flowers in bunches on a central stalk that does not develop until the plant is twenty or thirty years old. On reaching maturity, the stalk develops very quickly, growing to a height of twenty to twenty-three feet in a matter of days. The plant is very useful for making living fences in dry, hot regions. Although it originated in Mexico, it now grows naturally on the coasts of the Mediterranean. Its leaves produce a strong fiber and some varieties contain a sugary liquid that can be extracted to make pulque. The term pita is also used in Spanish to refer to the thread produced by the plant. Santamaría concurs with the definitions provided by the DRAE and adds that the most common genera to bear the name pita are Fourcraea and Agave.
