С этого фильма также начинается период его полной и безоговорочной творческой свободы и абсолютно ненормальных (т. е. вне каких-либо финансовых ограничений) условий труда - период, который ему удастся продлить вплоть до Великого диктатора, The Great Dictator. Съемки растянулись на целый год (к великому разочарованию акционеров фирмы «First National», которые впоследствии были сполна вознаграждены за свои тревоги). Было проявлено колоссальное количество материала, из которого в итоге было собрано 6 частей. Фильм уже почти не имеет ничего общего с бурлеском: это сентиментальная комедия, а в некоторых эпизодах - чистая мелодрама. Малыш вызвал у зрителей значительный эмоциональный шок. Главными причинами тому послужили выбранная тема (встреча 2 одиноких людей, лишенных семьи, - взрослого и ребенка), качество актерской игры (таланты Чаплина и Джеки Кугана великолепно гармонируют друг с другом и ни в коем случае друг другу не вредят), умелой дозировке смеха и слез. Не стоит забывать и еще об одной важнейшей причине успеха этой картины: прежде ни один фильм так не выигрывал от присутствия в нем хорошо знакомого публике главного героя. Все, что узнал зритель о герое за 7 лет, все, что публика любила в персонаже Чарли, способствовало тому, что Малыш словно открыл шлюзы для волны зрительских эмоций. Коллективная память публики стала помощницей и соавтором режиссера в преумножении достоинств его картины. Нечто подобное произойдет позднее с марсельской трилогией Паньоля.N.B.
