121 ἔνδορα
Grammatical information: n. pl.Meaning: prop. `what is put in the skin' (when sacrificing), ( SIG 1025, 48; 1026, 8; Kos: ἔνδορα ἐνδέρεται)Origin: IE [Indo-European] [206?] *derō `flay'Etymology: From ἐνδέρομαι referring also to δορά; note the explanation of ἔνδρατα (after ἔγκατα?) in H.: τὰ ἐνδερόμενα σὺν τῃ̃ κεφαλῃ̃ καὶ τοῖς ποσί. Stengel Hermes 54, 208ff.explained it as σπλάγχνα; but his connection with δέρτρον `retina' is correctly rejected by Kretschmer Glotta 12, 220f. Hypostasis of ἐν δορᾳ, Jones, Class. Rev. NS 9 (1959) 132. S. δέρω.Page in Frisk: 1,512Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἔνδορα

122 ἐνδυκέως
Grammatical information: adv.Meaning: `careful' (Il.), in Hp. explained as `continuously'.Derivatives: Also ἐνδυκές (Nic. Th. 263, H. [beside ἐνδύκιον]; prob. also A. R. 1, 883 for metr. impossible - έως).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Perhaps to ἀδευκής (s. v.) with uncertain analysis; both a verb *ἐν-δυκεῖν and a noun *δύκη are possible. Cf. Strömberg Prefix Studies 90; on the meaning Leumann Hom. Wörter 311f., who explains its use in Hp. from a false interpretation of Homer.Page in Frisk: 1,512Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐνδυκέως

123 ἔνοσις
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `shaking, quake' (Hes., E. in lyr.).Dialectal forms: Myc. enesidaone with difficult -e-Compounds: As 1. member in the ep. compounds ἐνοσί-χθων, ἐννοσί-γαιος `earth-shaker' surnames of Poseidon; in the same meaning ἐννοσίδᾱς (Pi.; with δα- in Δα-μάτηρ (s. Δημήτηρ and v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 203); after this εἰνοσί-φυλλος `shaking off foliage' (Hom.; ἐνν-, εἰν- metr. lengthening; cf. Chantr. Gramm. Hom. 1, 100); cf. Knecht Τερψίμβροτος 26.Derivatives: ἐνοσιζεται τρέμει, σείεται (Cyr.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Uncertain. The explanation by Pott, followd by many scholars, as *ἔν-Ϝοθ-τις to ὠθέω (s. also ἔθων, ἔθειρα) finds several objections: the sequence - θ-τ- should have given - στ- (cf. e. g. πύσ-τις beside πεῦ-σις); the ο-ablaut as in ἄ-φρων: φρήν is not expected in a τι-deriv., and refuted by Myc.; a prefixal ἐν- is not well explained ("bump against"?). If ἔνοσις is indeed a primary τι-deriv. (cf. Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 94f.), we would rather expect a formation like ἄρο-σις. ἔνοσις may have been derived from the compounds. - See Porzig Satzinhalte 193f. M. Janda, Compositiones indogerm. Schindler, 1999, 183-203 assumes a root * h₁enh₃- `to move' from Skt. ánas, Lat. onus ? (but no such root is attested, and its meaning would be `carry one a horse', which seems not adequate; also it does no solve the problem provided by Myc.).Page in Frisk: 1,523Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἔνοσις

124 ἐπικάρσιος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `transverse, crosswise, at a right angle' (ι 70, of ships, Hdt., Plb. etc.).Etymology: Also ἐγκάρσιος (Th.), after ἐναντίος ? Secondary simplex κάρσιον πλάγιον H., - ίως Suid. - Ultimately to κείρειν, ἐπικείρειν `cut' but in detail unclear. Strömberg Prefix Studies 92 starts from a verbal adjective *ἐπίκαρτος, from which ἐπικάρσιος like ἀμβρόσιος from ἄμβροτος (s. also on διπλάσιος); an σ-enlargement as in κορσόν κορμόν H., ἀ-κερσε-κόμης (s. also κόρση) seems also a possibility. - The general resemblance with Lith. sker̃sas `transverse', OPr. kirscha `over', Russ. čerez `through, over' can be explained as parallel formation from the root ( s)ker-t- `cut'. - Not from *ἐπὶ καρσί, plur. of ἐπὶ κάρ (Π 392) `on its head' (Bechtel Lex. s. v.).Page in Frisk: 1,537Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐπικάρσιος

126 ἐπίστιον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `staple-town, slip or shed for a ship' (ζ 265).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Term of the shipbuilding, by Aristarch explained as κατάλυμα and as Ion. identified with ἐφέστιος, - ον; acc. to the sch. on the place from ἱστίον. Schwyzer 425 suspects (like Risch 107) suffixal enlargement of a root noun *ἐπι-στᾱ (cf. OP upa-stā `help'). - Unclear is πίνουσα την ἐπίστιον Anacr. 90, 4; it concerns the joking indication of a drink.Page in Frisk: 1,543Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐπίστιον

127 ἐπιτάρροθος
Grammatical information: m. and f.Meaning: `helper' (Hom.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unknown. Resembles the synonymous ἐπίρροθος; cross from this and another word or "Streckform" (cf. on ἑκατη-βελέτης, - βόλος)? Acc. to Schwyzer Glotta 12, 15f. (with Ehrlich Betonung 54) compound of *ἐπι-τάρρο-θος = ταρσῳ̃ (- οῖς, - οῖιν) ἐπιθέων, - θέουσα [meaning?]; but - ρρ- for - ρσ- remains to be explained. Not better Brugmann BphW 39, 136ff.: *ἐπ-ιθά-ρροθος, to ἰθα- in ἰθα-γενής. - τάρροθος (Lyc.) is secondary.Page in Frisk: 1,543Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐπιτάρροθος

Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `earth', by Erot., Str. a. o. explained with γῆ, in ἔραζε, Dor. ἔρασδε `on the earth' (Il.); here ἔρας γῆς H.Compounds: The word is further supposed in compounds, e. g. as 2. member in πολύ-ηρος πολυάρουρος, πλούσιος H., as 1. member in ἐρεσι-μήτρην την γεωμετρίαν H.; on the last Hoffmann Festschr. Bezzenberger 82ff., who wants to read H. ἔρας γῆ and takes the word as neutr.; ἔραζε then from *ἔρασ-δε.Derivatives: ἐράναι βωμοί H. (Schwyzer 489; very doubtful); denomin. verb in ἀπ-εράω (s. v.) a. o. - Cf. also on ἔνεροι.Etymology: A general resemblance show a few Germanic and Celtic expressions for `earth etc.': OHG ero `earth', ONord. jǫrvi `sand(bank)', Welsh erw `field', all with u̯-suffix (old u-stem?); Goth. airÞa, ONord. jǫrđ, MIr. ert `earth'; all with t-suffix; unclear is Arm. erkir `earth'. - See Specht Ursprung 22; s. also Fraenkel Glotta 35, 79, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 247 w. n. 2.
