1 ἄρρατος
Grammatical information: adj.Other forms: In Euph. 24 the α is long.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unknown. From *ἀ-Ϝρᾰτ-ος, PIE. *u̯ert- `turn'?, cf. ῥατάναν. Schwyzer RhM 80, 209ff., Sommer Nominalkomp. 86, in which case the length of the α would be incorrect. An analysis - Ϝρα-τος is more obvious.Page in Frisk: 1,151Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄρρατος

2 ἔρα
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `earth', by Erot., Str. a. o. explained with γῆ, in ἔραζε, Dor. ἔρασδε `on the earth' (Il.); here ἔρας γῆς H.Compounds: The word is further supposed in compounds, e. g. as 2. member in πολύ-ηρος πολυάρουρος, πλούσιος H., as 1. member in ἐρεσι-μήτρην την γεωμετρίαν H.; on the last Hoffmann Festschr. Bezzenberger 82ff., who wants to read H. ἔρας γῆ and takes the word as neutr.; ἔραζε then from *ἔρασ-δε.Derivatives: ἐράναι βωμοί H. (Schwyzer 489; very doubtful); denomin. verb in ἀπ-εράω (s. v.) a. o. - Cf. also on ἔνεροι.Etymology: A general resemblance show a few Germanic and Celtic expressions for `earth etc.': OHG ero `earth', ONord. jǫrvi `sand(bank)', Welsh erw `field', all with u̯-suffix (old u-stem?); Goth. airÞa, ONord. jǫrđ, MIr. ert `earth'; all with t-suffix; unclear is Arm. erkir `earth'. - See Specht Ursprung 22; s. also Fraenkel Glotta 35, 79, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 247 w. n. 2. Il., also [ συθῆ, ἐσύθη] Hp., Aret.).Other forms: also (B., hell. epic) σεύω, aor. ἐσσύμην, ἔσσυτο, σύτο; ἐσ(σ)ύθην, σύθην, σύθι; also σεύατο, ἐσσεύαντο, act. ἔσσευα, σεῦα, perf. ἔσσυμαι, ptc. ἐσσύμενος (on the acc. Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 190), 3. pl. σεσύανται H., verbaladj. ἐπί-σσυτος.Compounds: Also with prefix, esp. ἐπι-.Derivatives: Beside it, rather deverbative than denominative, *σοϜ-έομαι \> *σοϜοῦμαι in σοῦμαι, σοῦνται, ipv. σοῦ, inf. σοῦσθαι (trag.), Dor. σοώμην, σῶμαι a. o. With lengthened grade σώοντο, σωομένους (A.R.); after the synonymous ρΏώοντο (s. ῥώομαι)? Unclear σεῦται (S. Tr. 645, lyr.); spoiled from σοῦται (Elmsley) or analog. after σεύομαι? -- Nominal derivv.: 1. As 2. member: αὑτό-σσυτος `self-sped' (A., S.); often - σ(σ)όος, e.g. λαο-σσόος `inciting the men' (Hom. a.o.); but δορυ-σσόος to σείω, νηο-σσόος to σῴζω (s. vv.). 2. σοῦς (from *σόϜος) m. `(fast, upward) movement' (Democr., Lacon. after Pl. On σῶτρον s. ἐπίσσωτρον; on πανσυδί and ἐπασσύτερος s. vv. Cf. also τευμάομαι and τευτάζω.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [538] *ki̯eu̯- `be\/put in movement'Etymology: The maintenance of the ευ-diphthongs in σεύομαι etc. is to be explained as epic archaism (Wackernagel l.c., Schwyzer 745 w. n. 4, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 158 f.), the aor. ἔσσευ-α can go back on an athematic formation (Schwyzer l.c. w. reference of other interpretations, Chantraine 1, 385). -- Old inherited poetic verb with agreements in Indo-Iranian and Armenian. With σεύομαι, σεύεται agree exactly Skt. cyávate, Av. šyavaite `move (oneself), put oneself in movement', IE *ki̯éuetoi; with - σσυτος as well Skt. cyutá- `moved' and Av. fra-sūta- `come in movement' (length of the ū secondary); also *σοϜέομαι in σοῦμαι may be formally equated with the Skt. causative cyāváyate. The Arm. aor. č'og-ay (pres. ert`am) `I went', seemingly with o-grade, IE *ki̯ou-, must be deverbative or denominative. -- Cf. also κινέω and κίω. WP. 1, 363, Pok. 538, Mayrhofer s. cyávate; older lit. also in Bq.Page in Frisk: 2,694-695Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σεύομαι

If - άσσω is only enlarging (Schwyzer 733), the word could be connected with σπαίρω etc. Persson Beitr. 2, 869 n. 1, who considers the velar as part of the root (- σσω analogical for - ζω Debrunner IF 21, 224), wants to connect σπαράσσω with a motley group, to which would belong a. o. Lat. spargō, OWNo. spark n. `kick', σπαργάω, σφαραγέομαι. Diff. id. Beitr. 1, 418 (= WP. 2, 668, Pok. 992): to Arm. p'ert` `torn off piece' (-rt` \< - rkt-), OWNo. spiǫrr f. `strip of cloth' (PGm. * sperrō). Still diff.
