1916-2001Nacido en Chicago, Oscar Boetticher, Jr. estudio en la Central High School, la Culver Military Academy y la Universidad estatal de Ohio, donde destaco en futbol americano y en beisbol. Mas tarde, como es conocido, se interesaria tambien, vivamente, por el mundo de los toros, llegando a debutar como torero. Tal vez por esto ultimo fue contratado por la Fox como consejero tecnico de la pelicula Blood and Sand (Sangre y arena, Rouben Mamoulian, 1941). Casi de inmediato, en 1944, empieza a dirigir mo destas peliculas con su nombre completo, incluido el primero de sus westerns, The Wolf Hunters. Con The Bullfighter and the Lady (1951), de ambiente taurino, firmada ya como Budd Boetticher, empieza la que podria llamarse segunda etapa de su filmografia, de tono mas personal. Entre 1951 y 1956 dirige doce peliculas, nueve de ellas para Universal, con mayor o menor fortuna, de las que seis, exactamente la mitad, son westerns, algunos estimables. El propio Boetticher manifesto publicamente su preferencia por Traicion en Fort King, tal vez por ser el que peores criticas recibio. Se convierte en uno de los grandes nombres del western, y se hace justamente fa moso en todo el mundo a raiz de la realizacion de siete peliculas, cuatro de las cuales (Seven Men from Now, Los cautivos, Cabalgando en solitario y Estacion Comanche) cuentan con guion de Burt Ken nedy. Conocido este conjunto de peliculas como el “ci clo Ranown” (Randolph Scott + Harry Joe Brown), las siete fueron protagonizadas por Randolph Scott, y constituyen un hito singular dentro de la historia del genero cine matografico al que pertenecen. Cada una de ellas presenta un modelo de “itinerario” hacia la vida, la libertad, mas raramente el amor, que ha cen de este punado de joyas cinematograficas un material de gran interes humano y no menor belleza plastica y dramatica, presidido por la sencillez, la ausencia, por tanto, de retoricas, conceptual y formal, y la coherencia artistica. Por ello, el nombre de Budd Boe tticher figurara siempre con letras de oro en el panteon de hombres ilustres del western sonoro.El fin del ciclo Ranown parece ser, tambien, el fin de la ac tividad de Boetticher como director, si exceptuamos esporadicos episodios de series televisivas, labor que inicio en 1950, antes incluso de rodar The Bullfighter and the Lady, un postrer western, A Time for Dying, y un par de peliculas de tono documental. Hay quien afirma que, de no haber existido las peliculas del ciclo Ranown, el nombre de Budd Boetticher apenas mereceria una nota a pie de pagina en los diccionarios de directores. Tal afirmacion es, sin duda, exagerada, lo que no obsta para que, efectivamente, sean las peliculas de ese ciclo, consideradas individualmente y tambien en conjunto, las que le hayan supuesto su mayor gloria. 1932Neoyorquino, estudia cine en la Universidad de Cali fornia en Los Angeles (UCLA), y se convirte en un miembro mas de la “factoria Corman”. Empieza a dirigir en 1959, naturalmente peliculas de bajo presupuesto y rodaje rapido. En el curso de estos rodajes iniciales para Roger Corman, conoce a Jack Nichol son, con quien se asociara para llevar a cabo el rodaje de sus dos westerns mas famosos. Calificados como westerns enigmaticos, A traves del huracan y El tiroteo, el primero de ellos con guion del propio Nicholson, producen no poca perplejidad. Mas que de westerns situados mas alla de su tiempo, hay que hablar de westerns que tratan de modelar (y modular) un tiempo propio. La innovadora propuesta de Hellman, que empieza a hacer aguas ya en la inaugural El tiroteo (aunque ambas peliculas se rodaron practicamente de modo simultaneo, con actores y equipo tecnico semejantes), parece naufragar definitivamente en su tercera pelicula del genero. Indis cutiblemente, A traves del huracan es la mejor de todas ellas, la mas solida, aunque no me nos hosca y hermetica que El tiroteo. Ambas se estrenaron con unos cuantos anos de retraso respecto de su fecha de produccion. 31 Peckinpah, Sam
1925-1984Nacido en Madera, California, estudia la carrera de Derecho, que no llego a terminar, y se alista en el ejercito. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se empieza a interesar por el teatro. En la Universidad del Sur de California consigue culminar los estudios de Arte Dramatico y empieza su andadura teatral en Los Angeles. En 1949 es contratado por la cadena de television KLAC, donde recorrio toda la escala social de trabajos, que desembocaron en un contrato con la Allied Artists de Walter Wanger. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula. Pero fue en el rodaje de la tercera, Mayor Dundee, en el que se iniciaria la maldicion que parecio pesar sobre los hombros de Peckinpah, que convertiria, en lo sucesivo, cada rodaje en una aventura que nunca se sabia si alcanzaria el exito. Por ejemplo, fue apartado de la direccion de El rey del juego (The Cincinnati Kid, Norman Jewison, 1965) que, con toda seguridad, el hubiera elevado a una altura de la que, por desgracia, carecio el filme en su estado definitivo, pese al magnifico guion que le sirvio de soporte. Saltando de productora a productora, incluso de pais a pais, ya que paso un par de anos en Gran Bretana, donde rueda Perros de paja (Straw Dogs, 1971), uno de sus filmes mas conocidos y apreciados, llega a conformar una esplendida filmografia que solo baja de nivel en sus ultimas peliculas. Sam Peckinpah es el maximo representante del western crepuscular. Su primera pelicula, The Deadly Companions, pertenece al genero, y a el dedico lo mejor de sus esfuerzos, radicalmente incomprendidos por parte de los productores. Duelo en la alta sierra es un filme de un vigor inusual, lleno de nostalgia, riguroso y bello como los paisajes por los que discurre. Mayor Dundee es la gran obra frustrada del director. En el estado en que la dejaron los responsables de Columbia sigue siendo una pelicula soberbia, esbozo de la obra definitiva que pudo llegar a ser. Grupo salvaje es la pelicula emblematica de Peckinpah. Todas las discusiones acerca del uso de la violencia en sus filmes arrancan de esta amarga reflexion sobre la vida y los seres humanos. 1904-1989Nacido en Tacoma, Washington, empieza como ayudante de direccion en los albores del cine sonoro, y a mediados de la decada de los 40 se convierte en un director que, con el tiempo, resultara ser muy prolifico y razonablemente vulgar. Cuando empieza a dirigir, el western de serie B y las estrellas asociadas a el se encuentran ya en franca decadencia, por lo que cabe decir que Springsteen es uno de los ultimos en trabajar con estrellas del tipo Bill Elliott o Allan Lane. Esta en activo hasta bien entrados los anos 60, dirigiendo sobre todo westerns, pero tambien thrillers, algunas comedias e incluso varios mu sicales, lo que no conlleva, en su caso, la realizacion de proyectos mas ambiciosos. En todo caso, no es facil encontrar una pelicula de Springsteen que desagrade intensamente. Despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial empieza a dirigir, contratado por la Rank, y alcanza algunos exitos, particularmente en el terreno de la comedia, dentro del que cabe recordar Un medico en la familia (Doctor in the House, 1954), primera de una serie de tres peliculas, cada una de ellas algo peor que la anterior. El tono desenfadado le va mejor que el so lemne, donde no consigue resultados minimamente aceptables. Eso, el exceso de gratuita solemnidad, es el lastre de este atipico western ambientado en tierras canadienses. Se debe recordar el remake dirigido por Ralph Thomas de Treinta y nueve escalones (The 39 Steps), sin duda una de las mas famosas peliculas del Hitchcock britanico.
