La tábula rasa hace referencia a la tabla cubierta de una capa de cera que usaban los romanos para escribir y que se podía borrar raspando la superficie de cera para volver a escribir de nuevo sobre ella, igual que en una pizarra.◘ Hacer tábula rasa de algo significa borrar lo escrito, deshacer lo hecho y volver a empezar.◘ Según Aristóteles (384-322 a.C.), el entendimiento humano no dispone de ideas innatas como quería Platón. Cada individuo nace con la mente vacía, sin cualidades innatas, de modo que todos sus conocimientos y habilidades son exclusivamente fruto del aprendizaje a través de sus experiencias y sus percepciones sensoriales. Todos sus conocimientos le vienen al entendimiento de los sentidos: nihil est in intellectu quod prius non fuerit in sensu (nada hay en el entendimiento que antes no haya estado en los sentidos). El entendimiento es pasivo. El filósofo y teólogo medieval Santo Tomás de Aquino (1225-1274) toma la teoría de Aristóteles y dice que el entendimiento es tánquam tábula rasa, in qua nihil scriptum est.◘ "Otros ingenios suben un grado más porque son blandos y fáciles de imprimir en ellos todas las reglas y consideraciones del arte, claras, oscuras, fáciles y dificultosas; pero la doctrina, el argumento, la respuesta, la duda y distinción, todo se lo han de dar hecho y levantado.
