Показатель EVA определяется как разница между чистой прибылью и стоимостью использованного для её получения собственного капитала компании. Стоимость использования капитала определяется на основе минимальной ожидаемой ставки доходности, необходимой для того, чтобы рассчитаться как с акционерами, так и с кредиторами. Точно определив стоимость использования собственного капитала, можно эффективнее распределять его и выявлять нерентабельные хозяйственные подразделения, которые финансируются за счёт прибыльных. EVA помогает менеджерам анализировать, где именно создаётся стоимость и эффективно управлять денежными потоками.

Одна из приблизительных оценок прибыли компании. Традиционные финансовые отчеты преобразуются в отчеты экономической добавленной стоимости корректировкой некоторых показателей обычной деятельности и включением в операционную прибыль статей используемого капитала. Например, списание гудвилла капитализируется, так же как и чрезвычайные убытки и дисконтированная стоимость операционной аренды. Показатель Э.д.с. исчисляется по формуле: (ROIC – WACC) ? инвестированный капитал. (где ROIC – доходность инвестированного капитала, WACC – средневзвешенная стоимость капитала). Идея, заложенная в показатель, состоит в том, что стоимость компании для инвесторов может возрастать в том случае, если доходность инвестированного капитала превосходит стоимость капитала самой компании. Если помножить это превышение на инвестированный капитал, получим годовой прирост (или сокращение) стоимости компании, что при прочих равных условиях на эту сумму увеличит или уменьшит ее рыночную капитализацию.
