11 Billiard Cloth
BILLIARD CLOTH, or FELTThe finest textile fabric made and is a woollen cloth of the beaver type. The wool is very carefully selected and then spun with great care. Expert weavers operate the looms which weave into cloths the thousands of very fine threads. The cloth is then milled so thoroughly that it is waterproof and capable of resisting the dampest atmosphere. The dye used is such that light has little effect upon it. The best merino wool is used, and when ready for use the cloth has a perfect level face, soft and smooth. Plain weave is used for the best grades and 3-shaft twill for others. Widths from 72-in. to 81-in. Cloth shrinks about 331/3 per cent from reed width to the finished width. An all-cotton billiard cloth is now being made and is meeting with much support. -
12 Kano Cloth
A heavy coarse cloth made about 60 ends and 52 picks per inch, 24's warp and 24's weft. It is shipped to Africa in the grey and the natives dye it indigo and use it for clothing. -

14 Calico Printing (Machine)
The printing of textile fabrics is done in four general methods or styles (as illustrated) namely: - Direct Style - The printing colour is applied direct to the cloth and is afterwards fixed by steaming. Dyed Style - The cloth is printed with a mordant and afterwards dyed in a mordant dye, which dye is only taken up where the mordant has been printed. Or the cloth is dyed with a mordant, and the mordant discharged where required by printing with acids, then dyed with colour, leaving white where the acid is printed. Discharge Style - The cloth is first dyed then printed with a chemical to discharge the colour and leave a white pattern or a dyed ground. Resist Style - The cloth is printed with some chemical, then dyed, and where the cloth has not been printed it is coloured with the dye, the printed portions do not take up the dyeDictionary of the English textile terms > Calico Printing (Machine)

———————— A wool fabric united without weaving. It is actually a sheet of wool fibre, matted into a substantial texture by the application of heat, moisture and pressure. There are many woven fabrics that are felted so heavily that it is difficult to decide whether they are woven or not, as the threads are so closely interlocked that they cannot be separated, and this fabric is stronger than a carded felt of same weight. The shrinkage of a woven felt fabric may be up to 50 per cent in both width and length. The peculiar property of felt is believed to have been known in early times, and the process of felting was used for the tents of the Tartar, as well as for articles of their clothing. It is difficult to say when felted wool was first used for hats. Hats of felt were worn in England in the Middle Ages. -
16 Batik
The real batiks are hand-produced by natives of Java. They outline a design on both sides of a piece of cloth and this is followed in melted wax, then the cloth is dyed indigo, the wax cracks in the dye bath, and the colour penetrates through to the cloth, thus producing the fine veins, so characteristic of these prints. The cloth is washed in hot water to remove the wax. If two colours are required, the first process is to paint in wax the part required for the second colour, and after the indigo dyeing, the cloth is cleaned of wax, and the white part is treated with the second colour, and wax as above. The part to be blue or white is first painted in wax. The colours used are blue, brown, black and yellow. -
17 Liteau
In French mill parlance a narrow stripe along the selvedge of the cloth left undyed. After taking the cloth from the loom a narrow cord was sewn tightly along each selvedge, preventing the dye from penetrating the fabric and preserving the original colour. For scarlet, blue, and purple cloths the liteau was white, on green cloth it appeared yellow, and in violets a light red. The liteau served as a guide to the quality of the cloth. At the present time liteau means the blue and red weft stripes which are found on certain linen tablecloths. During the 14th century damask tablecloths were also made with such weft stripes. -

20 Bandhana Silks
Silk fabric woven in the Bombay district on hand looms from Indian silk, and dyed in the bandhana method. By this bandhana method, the white silk fabric is folded into two, four, eight, or sixteen folds, like folding a letter, corresponding with the number of repetitions of the design required. If two " repeats " are wanted, the fabric is folded once; for four " repeats " twice; for eight " repeats " three times, etc. On the uppermost of these folds the design is printed in lines, with blocks, in red ochre mixed with gum arable, and then knots are tightly tied at intervals along the lines with cotton thread, in such a way that when the fabric enters the dye, the dye will not penetrate to the small portion or spot on the cloth around which the thread is tied. The fabric is then " mordanted " with alum and dyed orange. Then another design is printed upon it in the interspaces of the first which remains tied, knots are tied on the second design, and the fabric dyed red. All the knots are then untied, the fabric spread on a small raised platform, and some of the orange spots touched with indigo to make them green. Bandhani is the name of this process in Gujrat, but in Rajputana and Ulwar, where Hindu is spoken, it is Bandhana. (Bandhana means knot tying, and is derived from the Hindu verb Bandhi, to tie.)
