•• * Смысл этого слова неудовлетворительно раскрывается и в толковых, и в двуязычных словарях. Hearty, sincere, warm, сердечный, теплый, искренний – все это совершенно не подходит и даже вводит в заблуждение в следующей фразе:
•• Administration officials describe the relationship between Secretary Powell and Mr. Cheney as cordial but sometimes uneasy. (New York Times)
•• Cordial в данном случае – антоним «теплоты». Речь идет, наоборот, о внешне любезных, вежливых, но по сути холодных отношениях. Somewhat uneasy – конечно, не непростые (хотя переводчики с русского иногда переводят непростые, нелегкие как uneasy. Это ошибка), а натянутые и, может быть, даже несколько нервозные отношения.
•• Отличный пример, характеризующий значение слова cordial, появился в связи с известными высказываниями премьер-министра Малайзии Махатхира Мохамада. Рейтер пишет о реакции премьер-министра Австралии:
•• Australian Prime Minister John Howard, speaking after the interview was published, promised frosty politeness when he met Mahathir on the final day of the summit. “I will maintain cordiality and no more with Dr. Mahathir,” he said.
•• Как видим, cordiality здесь фактически приравнивается к frosty politeness. Именно поэтому (благодарю за это и многие другие полезные замечания участника форума на сайте www.lingvoda.ru, выбравшего псевдоним Аврора Потемкина) cordially yours пишут в сухих, формальных письмах. Можно ли считать «внешнюю любезность» и «ледяную вежливость» полностью синонимичными – не знаю, но в дипломатии это, действительно, из одного ряда.
•• Но, как всегда, есть «но»: в некоторых контекстах cordial выступает в своем «нормальном», т.е. подсказываемом этимологией, значении. По моим наблюдениям, для этого нужен или не оставляющий сомнений контекст, или какое-то добавление типа very. Так, на одной из пресс-конференций президент Буш, отвечая на вопрос о своей встрече с мусульманскими лидерами в Индонезии, сказал:
•• It was not a hostile meeting, nor did I sense hostility. <...> It was a very cordial and good discussion.
•• Здесь в переводе я бы (по смыслу) сказал «теплая, хорошая беседа». Достаточно сравнить примеры в этом и предыдущем сообщениях, чтобы увидеть, что мы имеем дело с очень каверзным словом.
•• Еще один пример из Буша, где можно предложить в качестве нейтрального, почти всегда подходящего варианта перевода слово доброжелательный:
•• The commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks questioned President Bush and Vice President Cheney for more than three hours yesterday in a historic Oval Office meeting, a session that Bush described as “ wide-ranging” and “very cordial.” (Washington Post)
•• И далее в той же статье:
•• Bush and his questioners described the session as amicable and, according to some members, even jovial at times.
•• Здесь amicable явно синоним cordial, а вот jovial – учитывая тему разговора – даже и не знаешь, как перевести (American Heritage Dictionary: marked by good humor; jolly). Бабель любил слово жовиальный, но в русский язык оно не вошло. Предлагаемое БАРСом прилагательное живой непросто вставить в данный текст («беседа иногда приобретала характер живого общения»? – не то). Может быть, дружески-оживленный разговор? (Кстати, английское a lively conversation часто служит эвфемизмом, за которым скрывается перебранка).
