nсамая западная федеральная земля Австрии, находится между Боденским озером и Арльбергом, административный центр - г. Брегенц. В I-V вв. здесь была римская провинция Рэция, проводилась активная романизация населения. В V в. территорию заселяют алеманны. С VII в. начинает распространяться христианство. Среди владений Габсбургов Форарльберг пользовался особыми привилегиями, напр., имел земельный парламент, состоящий только из крестьян и городских граждан. В настоящее время основными источниками дохода являются туризм, текстильная промышленность, отгонно-пастбищное животноводство, энергетика. Арльбергский район - важный центр альпийского лыжного спорта. Население говорит на алеманнском диалекте [букв. "перед Арльбергом"]см. тж.
