Генерал Миро из штаба в ярости приказывает командиру 75-й батареи дать залп по траншее, где укрылись солдаты Дакса. Командир батареи отказывается подчиняться без письменного приказа. Убедившись, что взять позицию невозможно, Дакс дает приказ к отступлению.Миро хочет отдать под трибунал и казнить 100 человек из части в назидание прочим. Брулару удается убедить его, что хватит и 3-х ― то есть по солдату из каждой роты. Даксу разрешают защищать в суде 3 несчастных, на которых падет выбор. Один – капрал Пари (лейтенант увидел прекрасный повод избавиться от ненужного свидетеля). Вместе с ним – рядовой Арно, жертва жребия, и рядовой Фероль, выбранный, по его же словам, за свое происхождение. Процесс откровенно сфабрикован, и Дакс напрасно протестует против этого спектакля. Всех 3 приговаривают к расстрелу. В общей камере приговоренные думают о побеге. Пари и Фероль исповедуются у священника. Но Арно оскорбляет его и пытается ударить. Пари сбивает его с ног, и Арно ударяется головой.Дакс намеренно назначает лейтенанта Роже командовать расстрельным взводом. Затем он пытается добиться встречи с генералом Бруларом, чтобы отменить казнь. Встреча происходит на балу, устроенном генералом в замке, где располагается штаб. Можно даже сказать, что желание автора избегать точных политических комментариев ограничило и ослабило посыл фильма.Стиль Кубрика – крепкий, блестящий (ср. проезды камеры по окопам), контрастный – в основном сохраняет приверженность классике. Но на нем уже заметен проявляющийся изнутри отпечаток барокко, особенно в выборе для съемок замка XVIII в. (окрестности Мюнхена, где был снят весь фильм) и в сцене бала. Этот легкий налет барочной пышности придает ряду сцен галлюцинаторный оттенок, который не только не вредит ядовитому реализму сюжета и темы, но, напротив, только усиливает его воздействие. Как и в Заводном апельсине, A Clockwork Orange, но в гораздо более завуалированном виде, визуальная и пластическая барочная пышность служит у Кубрика приправой к классическому, гуманистическому и, наконец, очень «разумному» взгляду на мир.Последний эпизод, довольно неоднозначный, – один из самых красивых во всем творчестве Кубрика. Внешняя сентиментальность стирает в сознании солдат свежие следы пережитых ужасов и несправедливостей. Она стирает также ненависть, национализм и все искусственные преграды, которые служат самым распространенным топливом для войн.N.B. Роман Хамфри Кобба, воевавшего в частях канадской армии и пострадавшего при газовой атаке на французском фронте в 1917 г., основан на различных реальных событиях Первой мировой войны. Среди них – отданный генералом Делетуалем приказ о расстреле 6 солдат, выбранных по жребию. Расстрел солдата, привязанного к носилкам, вдохновлен смертью младшего лейтенанта Шапелана. Однако ночью, когда Боне заболевает, Пикар исчезает. Жители деревни готовятся осуществить план, подготовленный ими достаточно давно: выдать Пикара как человека, подорвавшего мост. Пикар будет казнен.► Самый странный и мрачный из 7 фильмов Уолша с Эрролом Флинном. Это почти экспериментальная картина. Уолш помещает некоторые особенности своих привычных героев в другой контекст, смешивает их в других пропорциях. Многим (и Флинну в 1-ю очередь) щекочет нервы мысль о том, чтобы стать бесшабашными авантюристами. С этим у нас полный порядок. С 1-х минут фильма Флинн – вор и убийца. Герой Уолша не имеет четко определенного места в системе моральных ценностей. Из-за своего крайнего индивидуализма он плохо уживается на этой территории и чаще всего остается «за гранью добра и зла».Следующая особенность героя Уолша – любовь к жизни, привлекательность и чувство юмора. Эта черта заметна и в Жане Пикаре (едва «выйдя» из тюрьмы, он соблазняет 1-ю женщину, попавшуюся на пути, – удивительную Фей Эмерсон). Только на то, чтобы удовлетворить эту любовь к жизни, ему остается всего 3 дня. Даже в этом очень мрачном фильме есть место для юмора, который иногда прорывается неожиданно (как в гениальной сцене фальшивой исповеди Пикара перед Боне), но при этом присутствует и перманентно, поскольку главный герой постоянно играет со своей судьбой и судьбами других людей.Остается его решение в финале, его самопожертвование. Умирая таким образом, персонаж дважды побеждает судьбу. 1-й раз – самолично выбрав час и обстоятельства своей смерти (сценарий предоставляет ему 10 возможностей бежать, но он ими не воспользуется). 2-й раз – изобретая, выдумывая для себя новую судьбу. Жан Пикар, вор и убийца, становится Жан-Эмилем Дюпоном, героем Сопротивления. И не только формально: ведь он на самом деле спасает от смерти сотню заложников и настоящего диверсанта. Тем самым он добавляет еще одну роль в свою и без того разнообразную и насыщенную жизнь. Как писал Шекспир: «И каждый не одну играет роль…» (эту цитату приводит Уолш в конце автобиографии). Фильм можно также рассматривать как видение, посетившее Пикара под ножом гильотины. Но с какой стороны ни взгляни, он подчеркивает современность гения Уолша.
