16 -end o late?-
Nota d'usoPer indicare gli anni, i mesi, i giorni o le ore collocati alla fine di un particolare periodo di tempo si usa l'aggettivo late, non la locuzione at the end of: This happened in the late 1970s, questo accadde alla fine degli anni 70, (non This happened at the end of the 1970s, che significherebbe negli ultimi mesi del 1979); She's arriving late evening, arriverà di sera tardi. Si noti che nel caso di lunghi periodi late viene preceduto dall'articolo the: the late-19th century, il tardo Ottocento. -
17 -first o early?-
Nota d'usoPer indicare i primi giorni, mesi o ore di un determinato periodo di tempo non si usa l'aggettivo first, ma bisogna utilizzare early: The exam is in early June, l'esame è ai primi di giugno; Early in the morning, di primo mattino; In the early 20th century, nei primi decenni del XX secolo. -
18 -half o mid?-
Nota d'usoPer indicare gli anni, i mesi, i giorni o le ore collocati verso la metà di un particolare periodo di tempo si usa l'aggettivo mid, non half: We'll be back in mid-June, torneremo a metà giugno; She's arriving mid-morning, arriverà a metà mattina; the mid-19th century, la metà del XIX secolo. -
19 -text o lyrics?-
Il sostantivo “text”, invece, designa genericamente un testo scritto per essere letto (non cantato): Il testo in questa fotocopia è troppo chiaro, si legge male, the text in this handout is too faint to read; Questo sarà il vostro libro di testo, this will be your textbook; Un testo chiave della filosofia ottocentesca, a key text of 19th-century philosophy. -
20 -the company is o the company are?-
In generale, se si pensa al sostantivo in modo impersonale, si sceglie il singolare: This company was founded at the turn of the century, la società fu fondata all'inizio del secolo. English-Italian dictionary > -the company is o the company are?-
