12 ἥδομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `rejoice, have pleasure',Other forms: Dor. ἅδ-, Boeot. (Corinn.) Ϝάδ- ( γάδεται ἥδεται H.), aor. ἡσθῆναι (IA.), fut. ἡσθήσομαι (S., Pl.), aor. med. ἥσατο (ι 353)Compounds: also with prefix, esp. συν-; rarely act. ἥδω, ἧσαι, ἥσω `have pleasure' (Antipho Soph., hell.; after τέρπω a. o.; Schwyzer-Debrunner 228). As 2. member - ηδής, generally connected with ἡδύς or ἥδομαι: ἀ-ηδής `unpleasant' (IA.), μελι-ηδής `as sweet as honey', θυμ-ηδής `heart-pleasing' a. o.Derivatives: 1. ἦδος n. `pleasure' (Il.; on the absence of aspir. and the doubtful traces of the digamma Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 184 and 151); in the meaning `vinegar' backformation from ἡδύς, s. v.; 2. ἡδονή, Dor. ἁδονά `pleasure' (IA., Dor.; Schwyzer 490, Chantraine Formation 20) with ἡδονίς = ἀφύδιον (Cyran. 18), ἡδονικός (Arist.). 3. ἁδοσύνα ἡδονή H. 4. ἥσθημα `id.' (Eup.). 5. ἡστικός `pleasant' (S. E.).Etymology: An exact formal counterpart is Skt. ἅπ. λεγ. svādate `become tasty(?)' (RV. 9, 68, 2; of soma); much more usual however is svadate, -ti `enjoy, taste well' resp. `make tasty, sweeten'. On -a- see Lubotsky, MSS 40 (1981) 133-8. The 2. member - ηδης agrees with Skt. prá-svādas- `pleasant' (RV. 10, 33, 6); the nasal suffix in ἡδ-ονή is seen in Skt. svā́d-ana- `making tasteful' (RV. 5, 7, 6), - anam n. `be tasteful' (class.). - See ἡδύς and ἁνδάνω, also ἀδημονέω.Page in Frisk: 1,622-623Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἥδομαι

13 ὀγκάομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to cry, to roar', of an ass (Theopomp. Com., Arist., Luc.).Derivatives: ὄγκησις f. (Corn., Ael.), - ηθμός m. (Luc., Nonn.), - ημα n. (gloss.) `roaring, bellowing', also of oxen; - ηστής m. `crier' (AP), - ηστικός `inclined to crying' (sch.); ὀγκώδης `id.' (Ael.).Etymology: Intensive formation like βοάω, γοάω, μυκάομαι etc.; s. vv. and Schwyzer 683. -- A direct formal agreement gives the also semantically very close Lat. uncāre `drone', of a bear (Suet.). Beside it with orig. initial *e- (IE * enk-) and semantically a little deviating Slav., e.g. Russ. jaču, -átь `groan, call plaintively', Alb. nëkónǰ, Geg. angój `groan, sigh, lament'. Celt. and Germ. give in the same meaning diverse forms with orig. media (IE * ong-), e.g. MIr. ong `groan, sigher, lament', MLG anken `groan, sigh'; from Balt. we have Lith. iñksti `groan, sigh', ùngti `id.' a.o. More forms in WP. 1, 133, Pok. 322, Vasmer s. jacátь, also Fraenkel s. angùs (with much material). Whether the word was in origin onomatop., is unknown (cf. Snell Hermes 70, 355). -- Lat. LW [loanword] oncāre `cry', of an ass (Suet.). S. also 2. ὄκνος `bittern'. - See now De Lamberterie RPh. 73 (1999) 37f. (derived from ὄγκος `gonflement').Page in Frisk: 2,346-347Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὀγκάομαι

14 ὀρχέομαι
Grammatical information: v.Other forms: Aor. ὀρχήσασθαι (Od.).Derivatives: 1. the nom. actionis ὀρχ-ηθμός m. `dance' (Hom., h. Ap.), - ησμός m. `id.' (A.), - ηστύς f. `id.' (Hom., E. Kyk. 171; as κιθαριστύς); younger - ησις f. `id.' (posthom.; Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 127; semantic. in spite of Benveniste Noms d'ag. 86 not to be separated from - ηστύς), - ημα ( ὑπ- ὀρχέομαι) n. `id.' (Simon., S., Pl.); 2. the nom. agentis - ηστήρ (Il.), - ηστής, Dor. - ηστάς (Il., Thera, OldAtt.) m.'dancer' with f. - ηστρίς (com., Pl.), - ήστρια(Moer.); 3. the nom. loci - ήστρα f. `dancing-room, orchestra' (Pl., Arist.); 4. the adj. - ηστικός `belonging to dance(r)s, fit for dancing' (Pl., Arist.). Deatils in Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 28f. (a.o. on the analog. - σ-), Benveniste Origines 201, Noms d'ag. 65 f. a. 86, Porzig Satzinhalte 183 a. 236.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Iterative-intensive formation, formally from primary ἔρχομαι; s.v. and Schwyzer 719 a. 702 (which DELG finds neither formally nor semantically convincing). Skt. r̥ghāyáti `tremble, scream, rage', of old compared (Bq s.v. w. lit., WP. 1, 147, Pok. 339, Mayrhofer s.v.) can at most be indirectly connected.Page in Frisk: 2,433Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὀρχέομαι
