χλαῖνα, ion. χλαίνη, ein Oberkleid, ein Mantel, der über das Unterkleid, χιτών, geworfen wird, zum Schutze gegen Kälte u. Sturm, von Männern getragen; bei Hom., der sie deshalb ἀνεμοσκεπής u. ἀλεξάνεμος nennt, Il. 16, 224 Od. 14, 529; sie war von Wolle u. heißt deshalb οὔλη; oft purpurfarbig, φοινικόεσσα; ein doppelter Mantel, διπλῆ, Il. 10, 133; der einfache heißt ἁπλοΐς, 24, 230 Od. 24, 276; wurde über die Schultern geworfen, Od. 21, 118, u. mit einer Spange befestigt, Il. 10, 133. Man brauchte die χλαῖνα auch, um sich für den Schlaf damit zuzudecken, Od. 3, 359. 11, 189. 14, 500. 20, 4. 95; Theocr. 19, 19; als Kampfpreis ausgesetzt Il. 24, 230; Her. 2, 91; übh. Gewand, Aesch. Ag. 846; Soph. Trach. 537; σὺν τᾷδε τράγου χλαίνᾳ μελέᾳ Eur. Cycl. 80; öfters bei Ar. u. bei sp. D., einzeln auch in Prosa. – Vgl. χλανίς und χλαμύς. – Die Ableitung der alten Gramm. von χλιαίνω, wärmen, ist schwerlich richtig; Andere führen es auf χλάνος zurück; wahrscheinlich von ΛΑ'ΝΑ, lana, mit λάχνος, λάσιος verwandt.
