ξουθός, auch 2 Endgn, wie ξανϑός, gelblich, bräunlich (nach Ath. eine Mittelfarbe zwischen ξανϑός u. πυῤῥός); ἀηδών, Aesch. Ag. 1113; ξουϑῆς μελίσσης, Soph. frg. 464, wie Eur. I. T. 634; διὰ ξουϑᾶν γενύων, Hel. 1111, wie Ar. ξουϑοῖσιν zum Vorigen ziehen will, wie Ep. ad. 416 (IX, 373), σκιεραῖς ξουϑὰ λαλεῦντα νάπαις, von der Cicade gesagt, deren Flügel sonst ξουϑά heißen.

Unexplained. An analysis in ξ-ου-θός with connection with the German. word for `grey(brown)', e.g. OE hasu (IE *ḱasu̯o-), to which also Lat. cānus (s. ξανθός), makes resticted claims. -- The general similarity with ξανθός has long ago been observed (e.g. Curtius 522). 16 ξανθός
A, auch von Frauen brauchen, so ist die erste Erkl. richtiger; es wird dem Achilleus auch ausdrücklich ξανϑὴ κόμη beigelegt, Il. 1, 197, 23, 141 (vgl, ξανϑὸς Ἀχιλεύς Pind. N. 3, 41), wie dem Odysseus ξανϑαὶ τρίχες, Od. 13, 391. 431. – Ξανϑαὶ ἵπποι, salbe, isabellfarbene Stuten, Il. 9, 407. 11, 680 (vgl. auch nom. propr.). – Pind. nennt die Athene ξανϑά, N. 10, 7, wie die Χάριτες, 5, 54; auch den Löwen, frg. 609; vom Wein, Soph. fr. 257; bei Eur. häufig vom Haare, auch Ἁρμονία ξανϑά, Med. 834; auch in Prosa überall; ξανϑοτέρα, Plat. Rep. X, 617 a; bei den Aerzten ξανϑὴ χολή; bei sp. D. auch, wie ξουϑός, Beiwort der Biene. – Bei Paul. Aeg. ist ξανϑή auch eine Salbe.
