D. – Bei den Bienen erklärten es Einige für schnell, wie Chaerem. bei Ath. XIII, 608 c sagt: ξουϑοῖσιν ἀνέμοις φορούμενοι; doch scheint hier die Bdtg »sein«, »zart« vorzuziehen, wie Phot. erkl., λεπτόν, ἁπαλόν, wenn man nicht eine bei späteren Dichtern wohl vorkommende Umstellung der Begriffe annehmen u. ξουϑοῖσιν zum Vorigen ziehen will, wie Ep. ad. 416 (IX, 373), σκιεραῖς ξουϑὰ λαλεῦντα νάπαις, von der Cicade gesagt, deren Flügel sonst ξουϑά heißen.

H. ξουθά οὐ μόνον ξανθά, ἀλλὰ καὶ λευκὰ καὶ πυρρά);.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: See v. Wilamowitz Eur. Her. v. 488, Méridier Rev. de phil. N. S. 36, 264ff., Leumann Hom. Wörter 215. Unexplained. An analysis in ξ-ου-θός with connection with the German. word for `grey(brown)', e.g. OE hasu (IE *ḱasu̯o-), to which also Lat. cānus (s. ξανθός), makes resticted claims. -- The general similarity with ξανθός has long ago been observed (e.g. Curtius 522).
