12 κοά̄λεμος
κοά̄λεμοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `blockhead' (Ar., Plu.), also (parodizing) name of a demon of stupidity (Ar. Eq. 221).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Ending as in ἰάλεμος (s. v.), further unclear foreign word; on the phonetics Schwyzer 302 and Björck Alpha impurum 46 and 258, who thinks of an onomatopoetic κο-. Clearly a Pre-Greek word, with the phoneme kʷ-? Cf. καυαλός μωρολόγος H., and κόαλοι βάρβαροι H. 14 κόβᾱλος
κόβᾱλοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `impudent rogue, mischievous knave', also (parodizing) mischievous goblins (Ar., Arist., D. C.); as adj. ntr. κόβαλα, - ον `knavish tricks' (Pherekr., Ar.).Derivatives: κοβαλεία (Din.), κοβάλευμα (Et. Gen.) `roguery'; ( ἐκ)κοβαλικεύομαι `rogue, deceive' (Ar. Eq. 270) with κοβαλικεύματα pl. (Ar. Eq. 332); from *κοβαλικός ( κοβαλικοῖσι conj. in Timocr. Fr. 1, 7 Diehl). - Also κοβαλεύω `transport' (pap., EM), NGr. κουβαλῶ `id.', κοβαλισμός `transport' (pap.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Popular words without etymology. After Björck Alpha impurum 46f. a. 258f. with v. Wilamowitz prop. `porter, transport worker', from where contemptible `rogue'; the original meaning would as a non Att.-Ion. element have been introduced in the koine. As home of κόβαλος v. Wilamowitz GGA 1898, 689 assumes Korinth; Zacher IFAnz. 18, 86 (s. also Kretschmer KZ 55, 85f.) and supposes, also hypothetically, that the word is Thraco-Phrygian (like κοάλεμος). Against connection with Lat. caballus (Grégoire Byzantion 13, 287ff.; cf. on καβάλλης) s. Björck l. c. - The word is prob. 15 κρόταφος
Grammatical information: m., usu. pl.Meaning: `temple', metaph. `side, profile, steep mountain-slope' (Il.). Byforms with metathesis: κόρταφος (Pl.Kom.[?; Maas KZ 46,159], EM, Et. Gud.), κότραφος ( PMag. Osl. 1, 152).Compounds: Compp., e.g. πολιο-κρόταφος `with gray temples' (Θ 518).Derivatives: κροταφίς f. `pointed hammer' (Att. inscr., Poll., H.; on the meaning below), κροτάφιος `of the temples' (Gal.), κροταφίτης `temple-muscel' (medic.; Redard Les noms grecs en - της 101), f. pl. - ίτιδες ( πληγαί Hp.). Denomin. κροταφίζω `strike on the temple, box on the ear' (pap.) with κροταφιστής (Gloss., H. s. κόβαλος).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Generally (e.g. Brugmann Grundr.2 2, 1, 390) derived from κρότος as "the knocking (of the veins in the temples)". Because of the meaning of κρότος `the knocking which one hears, noise' κρόταφος cannot refer to the beating of the veins which one sees (Pedersen KZ 39,237 A. 1, Benveniste Mél. Vendryes 56), but must refers to the inner noise, we hear; s. Frisk GHÅ. 57: 4, 18 f. with a diff. hypothesis: κρόταφος prop. "Totschlag, Stelle des Totschlages" (cf. κόλαφος) like rom. dial. abattin `temples'; so κροταφίς prop. "Schläfengerät"? Thus also Wüst `Ρῆμα 1, 11 ff. - Fur. 257 connects κόρση `temple'; thus Forbes, Glotta 36, 258ff,Page in Frisk: 2,25-26Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κρόταφος

16 κυβιστάω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `tumble head forward' (Il., Pl., X.)Other forms: - έω Opp. K. 4, 263.Derivatives: κυβιστητήρ `who tumbles head forward' (Hom., E., Tryph.; Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2,13), also with haplology κυβιστήρ (H.) and κυβιστής (Delos; uncertain; cf. Fraenkel Glotta 2, 31 n. 2 and below); κυβίστησις (Plu., Luk.), - ημα (Luc.) `somersault'.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Expressive verb with unclearer formation and unknown origin. The verbs in -( σ)τ- present nothing comparable with κυβιστάω; formations as ἑρπυστάζω (: ἑρπύζω, ἕρπω) a. o. (Schwyzer 706) suggest a *κυβίζομαι (evtl. through κυβιστής; s. above). - One compares since Curtius and Fick (s. Bq and WP. 1, 375) a few words given in EM: κύβη = κεφαλή ( κυβιστάω = εἰς κεφαλην πηδῶ), κύβηβος = ὁ κατακύψας, κυβηβᾶν ' κυρίως τὸ ἐπὶ την κεφαλην ῥίπτειν' (after H. = θεοφορεῖσθαι, κορυβαντιᾶν); further κυβητίζω ἐπὶ κεφαλην ῥίψω, κυβησίνδα ἐπὶ κεφαλήν, η τὸ φορεῖν ἐπὶ νώτου, η κατὰ νώτου H. Further κύμβη `head' (EM 545, 27) and κύμβαχος `head formost', ἀνακυμβαλιάζω. See Kuiper, Gedenkschrift Kretschmer 213f. (Not better Frisk, who wants to consider rather κύβος `dice'.) All the words would belong to κυφός, κύπτω. Frisk assumes that the word is northern, because of the β for φ; but there is no reason to connect κυφός.). So we have κυ(μ)β-, κυμ- `head' which is clearly Pre-Greek. - S. also Szemerényi, Sprache 11 (1966) 2 a. 6. Not with Prellwitz to κόβαλος; cf. Thumb KZ 36, 193 f.Page in Frisk: 2,38-39Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κυβιστάω

17 σκιμᾱλίζω
σκιμᾱλίζωGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `jeer, flout' (Ar. Ach. 444, Pax 549, D.L. 7, 17); after the gramm. (Moer., Phryn., H.) = καταδακτυλίζω; after sch. Pax ad loc. `to hold up the middle finger' (sens. obsc.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin] (S)Etymology: Formation like κόβαλος, σκίταλος and other comedy-words (cf. Björck Alpha impurum 46f., 259f.); further unexplained. -- In the same or similar meaning σκινθαρίζω ( σκανθ- Poll.), σκινδαρ-εύεσθαι, - ίσαι H., who also mentions the nouns σκίνδαρος, - ριος. -- The word in - αλλ-(ος) seem all Pre-Greek (Beekes FS Kortlandt).Page in Frisk: 2,731Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκιμᾱλίζω
