In direct and indirect questions
► In direct and indirect questions as well as after expressions of (un)certainty and doubt (e.g. no sé), translate who using quién/quiénes w hen it is the subject of a verb:
Who broke the window? ¿Quién rompió la ventana?
She had no idea who her real parents were Ignoraba quiénes eran sus verdaderos padres ► When who/ whom is the object of a verb or preposition, translate using quién/quiénes p receded by personal a or another preposition as relevant:
Who(m) did you call? ¿A quién llamaste?
Who(m) is she going to marry? ¿Con quién se va a casar?
You must tell me who you are going to go out with Tienes que decirme con quién/quiénes vas a salir
In exclamations
► Translate using quién/quiénes w ith an accent as in the interrogative form:
Who would have thought it! ¡Quién lo hubiera pensado!
As relative
► When who/ whom follows the noun it refers to, the most common translation is que:
Do you recognize the three girls who have just come in? ¿Reconoces a las tres chicas que acaban de entrar?
Peter, who was at the match, has told me all about it Peter, que estuvo en el partido, me lo ha contado todo
That man (who(m)) you saw wasn't my father El hombre que viste no era mi padre NOTE: Personal a is not used before que.
"Who" as subject of a verb
► When who is the subject, que can sometimes be substituted by el cual/ la cual or quien (singular) and los cuales/ las cuales or quienes (plural). This can help avoid ambiguity:
I bumped into Ian and Sue, who had just come back from Madrid Me encontré con Ian y con Sue, la cual or quien acababa de regresar de Madrid ► Only que is possible in cases where subject who can be substituted by that, i.e. where who defines the person in question and the sentence does not make sense if you omit the who clause:
The little boy who won the cycle race is Sarah's nephew El niñito que ganó la carrera ciclista es el sobrino de Sarah
"Who(m)" as object of a verb or preposition
► When who (m) is the object of a verb, you can translate it using que as above. Alternatively, especially in formal language, use personal a + quien/ quienes or personal a + ((article)) + cual/ cuales {etc} or personal a + ((article)) + que:
The woman (who or whom) you're describing is my music teacher La señora que or a quien or a la cual or a la que describes es mi profesora de música
"Who(m)" as object of a preposition
► After prepositions, you should usually use que or cual preceded by the article or quien:
This is the girl (who or whom) I talked to you about esta es la chica de la que or de la cual or de quien te hablé For further uses and examples, see who, whom* * *noun (= World Health Organization) OMS f -

Cs.: uter... isne, qui... an ille, qui? etc.—Annon (an non) in the latter clause simply negatives the former: hocine agis an non? T.—Indirect, whether... or: agitur liberine vivamus an mortem obeamus: quaeso sitne aliqua actio an nulla.—Rarely annon: Roga velitne an non uxorem, T. — After a clause without correl. interrog. particle, in direct questions: ipse percussit an aliis occidendum dedit?: eloquar an sileam? V.—So with -ne pleonast.: obtrectatum esse, Gabinio dicam anne Pompeio, an utrique?—By ellips. of verb, an becomes simply disjunctive between two words: cum Simonides an quis alius polliceretur: cum id constaret, iure an iniuriā eripiendos esse reos, L.—Indirect: vivat an mortuus sit, quis curat?: hoc quaeramus, verum sit an falsum?— With ellips. of verb: neque, recte an perperam (sc. fiat), interpretor, L.; cf. discrimine recte an perperam facti confuso, L.—The former interrog. clause is often implied in a previous affirmation, and the clause with an expects a negative answer: quid enim actum est? an litteris pepercisti? (was it as I have said?), or did you, etc., i. e. you surely did not, etc.: at Pompeii voluntatem a me abalienabat oratio mea. An ille quemquam plus dilexit? or rather: sive vetabat, ‘an hoc inhonestum... necne sit addubites?’ (where an addubites asks a direct question, and hoc... sit an indirect question dependent on it), H.: quas Kalendas Iunias expectasti? an eas, ad quas, etc.?: an Scipio Gracchum interfecit, Catilinam... nos perferemus? or (if what I have said be questioned) while Scipio slew... are we to tolerate Catiline?—After a question, with num, an introduces a new question, correcting or denying the former, or rather: num iniquom postulo? an ne hoc quidem ego adipiscar...? or rather am I not even to get, etc., T.: num Homerum coegit obmutescere senectus? an studiorum agitatio vitae aequalis fuit? or was not rather? etc.—Sometimes the former interrog. clause, to be supplied, expects a negative answer, and the clause with an is an implied affirmation: a rebus gerendis senectus abstrahit? Quibus? an iis, etc.: unde ordiar? an eadem attingam, quae, etc.—So often annon? or is it not so? hem quo fretus sim... annon dixi, etc., T.: annon sensistis triumphatum hodie de vobis esse? or have you not? etc., L. — Ellipt.: cuium pecus? an Meliboei? Meliboeus's, I suppose, V.— II. Meton., without disjunctive force.—With expressions of doubt, ignorance, uncertainty, the former interrog. clause is regularly omitted, the latter with an expressing the belief or opinion of the speaker, I know not but, I incline to think, I suspect, perhaps, probably: hau scio an quae dixit sint vera, T.: res nescio an maxima, L.: dubito an Apronio data sit merces: haud sciam an ne opus sit quidem, etc., possibly it may not be desirable: is mortuus est, nescio an antequam, etc.: Qui scis, an, quae iubeam, sine vi faciat, T.—In indirect questions, whether: quaesivi an misisset: quae in discrimine fuerunt, an ulla post hanc diem essent, L.—With an repeated: animo nunc huc nunc fluctuat illuc, an sese mucrone... 19 Usage note : do
she’s doing her homework= elle fait ses devoirswhat are you doing?= qu’est-ce que tu fais?what has he done with the newspaper?= qu’est-ce qu’il a fait du journal?faire functions in very much the same way as to do does in English and it is safe to assume it will work in the great majority of cases. For the conjugation of the verb faire, see the French verb tables.Grammatical functionsIn questionsIn French there is no use of an auxiliary verb in questions equivalent to the use of do in English. When the subject is a pronoun, the question is formed in French either by inverting the subject and verb and putting a hyphen between the two ( veux-tu?) or by prefacing the subject + verb by est-ce que (literally is it that):do you like Mozart?= aimes-tu Mozart? or est-ce que tu aimes Mozart?did you put the glasses in the cupboard?= as-tu mis les verres dans le placard? or est-ce que tu as mis les verres dans le placard? When the subject is a noun there are again two possibilities:did your sister ring?= est-ce que ta sœur a téléphoné? or ta sœur a-t-elle téléphoné?did Max find his keys?= est-ce que Max a trouvé ses clés? or Max a-t-il trouvé ses clés?In negativesEqually, auxiliaries are not used in negatives in French:I don’t like Mozart= je n’aime pas Mozartyou didn’t feed the cat= tu n’as pas donné à manger au chatdon’t do that!= ne fais pas ça!In emphatic usesThere is no verbal equivalent for the use of do in such expressions as I DO like your dress. A French speaker will find another way, according to the context, of expressing the force of the English do. Here are a few useful examples:I DO like your dress= j’aime beaucoup ta robeI DO hope she remembers= j’espère qu’elle n’oubliera pasI DO think you should see a doctor= je crois vraiment que tu devrais voir un médecinWhen referring back to another verbIn this case the verb to do is not translated at all:I don’t like him any more than you do= je ne l’aime pas plus que toiI live in Oxford and so does Lily= j’habite à Oxford et Lily aussishe gets paid more than I do= elle est payée plus que moiI haven’t written as much as I ought to have done= je n’ai pas écrit autant que j’aurais dû‘I love strawberries’ ‘so do I’= ‘j’adore les fraises’ ‘moi aussi’In polite requestsIn polite requests the phrase je vous en prie can often be used to render the meaning of do:do sit down= asseyez-vous, je vous en priedo have a piece of cake= prenez un morceau de gâteau, je vous en prie‘may I take a peach?’ ‘yes, do’= ‘puis-je prendre une pêche?’ ‘je vous en prie’In imperativesIn French there is no use of an auxiliary verb in imperatives:don’t shut the door= ne ferme pas la portedon’t tell her anything= ne lui dis riendo be quiet!= tais-toi!In tag questionsFrench has no direct equivalent of tag questions like doesn’t he? or didn’t it? There is a general tag question n’est-ce pas? (literally isn’t it so?) which will work in many cases:you like fish, don’t you?= tu aimes le poisson, n’est-ce pas?he lives in London, doesn’t he?= il habite à Londres, n’est-ce pas? However, n’est-ce pas can very rarely be used for positive tag questions and some other way will be found to express the meaning contained in the tag: par hasard can often be useful as a translation:Lola didn’t phone, did she?= Lola n’a pas téléphoné par hasard?Paul doesn’t work here, does he?= Paul ne travaille pas ici par hasard? In many cases the tag is not translated at all and the speaker’s intonation will convey what is implied:you didn’t tidy your room, did you? (i.e. you ought to have done)= tu n’as pas rangé ta chambre? In short answersAgain, there is no direct French equivalent for short answers like yes I do, no he doesn’t etc. Where the answer yes is given to contradict a negative question or statement, the most useful translation is si:‘Marion didn’t say that’ ‘yes she did’= ‘Marion n’a pas dit ça’ ‘si’‘they don’t sell vegetables at the baker’s’ ‘yes they do’= ‘ils ne vendent pas les légumes à la boulangerie’ ‘si’In response to a standard enquiry the tag will not be translated:‘do you like strawberries?’ ‘yes I do’= ‘aimez-vous les fraises?’ ‘oui ’For more examples and particular usages, see the entry do. -
