PN 621, Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 236, Schwyzer 337.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: The forms, both the verbal and the nominal, go back on a λάμπω (Schwyzer 692). - Withou nasalwe find in Hitt. lap-zi `glow', lap-nu-zi `bring in glow, kindle' (MudgeLang. 7, 252, Benveniste BSL 33, 140). Further, with long vowel, IE. * lāp- or * lōp-, some Baltic words for `torch, flame': Lith. lópė, Latv. lāpa, OPruss. lopis; with short a-vowel, but deviating in auslaut, Celt., OIr. lassaim `flame', Welsh llachar `glow', which can go back on * laps-. - Further combinations in Bq and WP. 2, 383; also Fraenkel Wb. s. lópė. Cf. also λοφνίς. It is doubtful whether this material proves IE origin. On λαμψάνη s. v., id. λοφνίς. Are λαμπ-ηδών, λαμπ-υρίς Greek?
