A tutte le università si accede attraverso un esame di ammissione. La frequenza dei corsi è generalmente obbligatoria e la valutazione degli studenti si basa su elaborati scritti ( assignments) e su una serie di test ( almeno due per semestre). Le università britanniche, quasi tutte pubbliche, operano un sistema di numero chiuso per tutti i corsi di laurea.
