Many later scholars reject this conclusion, usu. in favor of identifying Sychar w. Askar (Samaritan Ischar) at the southeast foot of Mt. Ebal. Yet excavations seem to show that Jerome was right (s. RB 37, 1928, 619). A place called Sichar or Suchar in the Babyl. Talmud (Baba Kamma 82b; Menachoth 64b) cannot be identified w. certainty.
