Чарли зажигает спичку о лысый череп музыканта в оркестровой яме. Он изучает в бинокль дирижера, стоящего в полуметре от него, решает, что тот слишком космат, и дразнит его, изображая обезьяну. Дирижер случайно задевает его палочкой, и Чарли лезет на него с кулаками. Его оттаскивают от сцены. Он замечает одинокую девушку, глядящую на него с улыбкой. Он подсаживается к ней. Чуть позже с другой стороны садится ее муж, и руки Чарли и мужа встречаются на коленях девушки. Чарли предпочитает улизнуть и садится на авансцене. Толстая танцовщица, исполняющая восточный танец, вызывает у него град насмешек. Когда она валится с ног, он поднимается на сцену, чтобы помочь ей подняться, но сам оказывается погребен под ее весом. Зрители аплодируют, думая, что это заранее подготовленный номер. Чарли силой усаживают в ложу Он кладет питомца укротительницы змей в раструб тромбона из оркестра. Следующий номер: фокусник, переодетый чертом, изрыгает из глотки огонь. Бродяга с галерки тушит его водой из пожарного шланга. Вскоре все зрители, включая Чарли, промокают до нитки.► 47-я картина Чаплина и 12-я из 14 лент, снятых для студии «Essenay». Эта блистательная «2-частевка» отличается не только жестоким поведением персонажа, которое часто проявляется в 1-х картинах Чаплина, но и жестокостью психологической. Режиссер и главный герой одинаково безжалостны к так называемым «бывшим» – всевозможным бездарностям, собранным в этом засаленном мюзик-холле и, по всей вероятности, похожим на тех людей, с кем довелось встречаться Чаплину в его 1-х турне. Режиссер, обладающий необыкновенно острой наблюдательностью, несколькими точными штрихами рисует портреты нервозных или наполовину выживших из ума музыкантов, жалких артистов, лишенных всякого самоуважения (высокий певец из дуэта закидан различными предметами и овощами, сок стекает по его лицу, и все-таки он, ретируясь, благодарит публику). Не меньше этим людям достается и от бесстыжего, хамоватого, грубого и жестокого Чарли, которому пьянство едва ли служит достаточным оправданием. Эта жестокость хороша уже бы тем, что позволяет автору избежать губительного порока всех бурлескных комедий: слащавости. Отметим, что Чаплин играет здесь 2 роли: хорошо одетого светского персонажа в партере и бездомного пропойцу на галерке.
