111 Chain Stitch
A sewing machine stitch of loop formation in which each loop supports its predecessor. It may be made with one or two threads (see Cable Knitting) ———————— One of the most ancient of embroideries, and first brought from the East, where it is still done by Persians, Indians and Chinese. It was done on any material and in all kinds of thread, gold, silver, silk, cotton etc. The stitch is much used in ornamenting church fabrics. Tambour work is chain stitch done with a hook instead of a needle. Machine-wrought work has practically taken the place of the hand work. ———————— A stitch resembling a chain used in embroidery, tambour work and crochet. -
112 Full Regular
A term applied to knit goods which are shaped by the machine to fit the foot, leg or body, and the sections are sewn together by hand. -
113 Point
The French term for the various stitches they employ in the making of real lace and embroideries. ———————— The three lines of decorative stitching applied to the back of a glove. ———————— A term denoting hand-made lace. There are numerous laces to which the name is given, such as Point de Croix, Point d'Alencon. The latter part of the full term relates to the town or district or some special feature of handiwork. There are at least 200 varieties of point lace. The term should only be applied to denote laces made by the needle with a single line of thread, but today many kinds of pillow and machine-made laces are sold as point. -
114 Pointing
The operation in which points are put on gloves. This is usually done by machine, but for expensive gloves may be done by hand. -
115 Sac Wrist
A glove wrist which has no wrist opening, but is drawn in by means of an elastic. This permits forcing the hand into the glove and yet provides a close fit. -
