1 Aubry, Martine
b.1950Daughter of Jacques Delors, Martine Aubry is a French socialist politician, elected as leader of the Socialist Party (PS) in November 2008 after a fierce contest with her centre-left rival Ségolène Royal. As minister of employment in the Jospin government from 1997 to 2000, Aubry is best known for having introduced the statutory 35-hour working week into French labour law, a move heavily criticized by her political opponents, as having severly damaged France's international competitiveness and thereby boosted unemployment rather than reducing it. Though the Jospin government to which she belonged was committed to getting rid of "cumul des mandats", Aubry in early 2009 was simultaneously first secretary of the Socialist Party, Mayor of Lille, and president of the Lille metropolitan area. As leader of the PS, she has been much criticised from within, firstly for her very narrow margin of victory in the leadership contest (50.04%), secondly for being a "three-day-week" leader of the PS (the rest of the week being devoted to her functions in Lille) and thirdly for leading the party to its worst electoral score, in the 2009 European elections, where the Socialists obtained under 15% of the vote, just a short way in front of the Green party.Since the Strauss-Kahn affair rocked the Socialist party in 2011, Aubry is seen as one of the two main contenders for nomination as the PS's candidate in the French 2012 Presidential election - the other being her predecessor the more social democratic François Hollande.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. It symbolizes the cultural ties shared by Spanish-speaking countriesOn December 28 people in the Spanish-speaking world celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents, a religious festival commemorating the New Testament story of the massacre of the ‘Innocents’, by playing practical jokes, or inocentadas, on one another. The classic inocentada is to hang paper dolls on someone's back without their knowing. Spoof news stories also appear in newspapers and the mediaIn Latin America and Spain, Labor Day is celebrated on May Day. In many Latin American countries, where workers still suffer greatly from low wages and bad working conditions, May Day celebrations often have strong overtones of protestCelebrated on November 1, is a day on when people place flowers on the graves of loved ones. Lit actJORNADA INTENSIVASpanish stores, offices and schools used to close at midday when everyone went home to have lunch with their families, and all activity would come to a standstill. Only shift workers and civil servants would depart from this pattern and work from eight to three in what is called a jornada intensiva (or “intensive working day”). Many small offices would change their timetable in the summertime and did not take a lunch break. This is still the case today, especially in rural areas and small towns or in very hot regions. However, department stores and superstores have now broken ranks and stay open all day. Many large companies now prefer their employees to take shorter lunch breaks, which means that, in big cities at least, they do not have time to return home for the traditional long lunch.* * *f1 (working) day;media jornada half-day2 distancia day’s journey3 DEP round of games* * *jornada nf1) : expedition, day's journey2)jornada de trabajo : working day3) jornadas nfpl: conference, congress* * *jornada n day -

Viernes Santo, Sábado Santo and Domingo de Resurrección (Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday) are all national public holidays, with additional days being given as local holidays. There are long processions through the streets with pasos - religious floats and sculptures. Religious statues are carried along on the shoulders of the cofrades, members of the cofradías or lay brotherhoods that organize the processions. These are accompanied by penitentes and nazarenos generally wearing long hooded robes. Seville, Málaga and Valladolid are particularly well known for their spectacular Holy Week processions.* * *1) ( periodo) weekla semana próxima or que viene or (Méx) que entra — next week

The activities of the week can be more or less religious in nature, depending on the region. In Spain (especially in Andalusia) there are spectacular nocturnal processions with “pasos”, which are floats carried through the streets on the shoulders of bearers, with huge banks of candles and dramatic sculptures of Jesus - crucified or resurrected - or the Virgin Mary, dressed in elaborate, jewel-studded costumes. The “pasos” are solemnly escorted by “cofrades”, hooded members of a Catholic brotherhood or “cofradía”, who march in step to the beat of a drum. Some walk barefoot and flagellate themselves as a sign of Christian repentance, while the atmosphere on other processions can be much more festive.* * *f week;entre semana during the week, midweek* * *semana nf: week* * *semana n week -
