Estas hermandades, a las que solo se puede ingresar mediante invitación, organizan fiestas, recogen fondos con fines benéficos e intentan hacer que su hermandad sobresalga entre las demás. Suelen tener nombres compuestos de letras del alfabeto griego, como por ejemplo Kappa Kappa Gamma. Existe división de opiniones en cuanto a los beneficios o ventajas de estas hermandades; para los miembros es una buena manera de hacer amigos, pero la mayoría de los estudiantes piensan que son elitistas y discriminatorias.
