La prima costruzione è utilizzata nella lingua corrente, parlata e scritta, la seconda è limitata all'uso formale, soprattutto scritto. Gli esempi mostrano che cui si rende con whom quando è riferito a persone e con which quando è riferito a cose o animali. - Quando cui è usato per indicare possesso si traduce con whose: l'uomo la cui auto, il cui portafoglio... the man whose car, wallet... - In cui può essere usato con valore locativo o temporale, ed è reso rispettivamente da where e when: la discoteca / il giorno in cui ci siamo conosciuti = the disco where / the day when we met. v. anche la nota della voce 1. che.pron.rel.inv.1 (riferito a persone) whom; la persona di cui parlavo the person of whom I spoke, the person who I told you about; la ragazza (a) cui ho dato un bacio the girl who(m) I gave a kiss to, the girl to whom I gave a kiss; non avevo nessuno con cui parlare I didn't have anybody to talk to2 (riferito a cose e animali) which; il contratto di cui ha parlato the contract which he's spoken about, about which he's spoken; il modo in cui sono stati trattati the way they were treated, the manner in which they were treated; non ho nulla con cui scrivere I have nothing to write with; la ragione per cui the reason why o that; la nazione da cui provengo the country I come from, the country from which I come3 (per indicare possesso) (riferito a persone) whose; (riferito a cose e animali) whose, of which; il ragazzo i cui libri the boy whose books; l'uomo con la cui figlia era sposato the man whose daughter he was married to4 in cui (dove) where; il paese in cui vivo the village where I live; (quando) when; il giorno in cui the day when o that5 per cui (quindi) so, thus, therefore; era stanca per cui andò a dormire she was tired and so went to bed6 tra cui molti soldati disertarono, tra cui Tom many of the soldiers deserted, among them Tom o including Tom. -
